Hello again, I am now looking for a book or manga or movie similar to Sylvia Plath's The Bell Jar and Girl, Interrupted. I think The Black Swan falls into this category 😀 The Bell Jar is one of my favorite novels ever so I feel like reading something similar to that tone... however you would describe it lol. At times, I have a strange affinity for characters who are considered mentally ill by the rest of the world when, really, I feel as though I am reading my own thoughts. If you have no read The Bell Jar or watched The Black Swan or Girl, Interrupted, then perhaps I think this poem or this poem's tone might help.

Gah. I really understand where you're coming from. Although I'm not sure all my recs quite fit.

Perhaps try the Depression and Mental Illness tags. I think there're probably more mental illness tags out there. The only one I saw in there that I remember enough to recommend is Watashitachi no Shiawase na Jikan.

Also, how about:
Norwegian Wood (book/film)
White Oleander (book/film)
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (film... book too?) Not sure so much about mental illness but certainly deep emotional problems.
American Psycho (book/film - I really recommend the book) Not quite the same as the ones you mentioned, it's quite psychotic and violent. And sometimes a bit heart-breaking, mainly in the book.
Quite a few coming-of-age novels have a theme of depression and mental problems - Catcher in the Rye, The Perks of Being a Wallflower...

Could also see this list about the 20 Greatest Memoirs of Mental Illness... I see Girl, Interrupted is at the top. I've only read no. 19 and seem to remember it was OK. I think Stephen Fry has written about his manic depression in his autobiographies too. Wikipedia also has this helpful list of Mental Illness in Fiction which lists a ton of notable works, although obviously it covers a wide spectrum of mental illness.

Edit: whoops, also, Pieta and could see some of its tags - Attempted Suicide, Suicidal, etc etc.

Double edit: whoops, just thought to do a forum search with "mental illness". There are quite a few topics already, have you looked through those?

Usotsuki Mi-kun to Kowareta Ma-chan Totteoki no Uso

Not sure if this is exactly what you're looking for, but imo it's a bit weird. But it definitely has a lot to do with mental illness.
