The scenario has already been set, and it's not simple advertising: it's pay for reading.
Of course, this is if Viz agrees. I sincerely doubt they will.
🤢 Figures. I guess the only question to ask now is "what the hell are they thinking?"
edit: I bet they tried this with Kodansha and got the cease distribution message as a response.

Doesn't this excuse look enough like a cover up?
njt: 1) It was a rough draft.
2) It was an outline describing how scanlators and translators can work officially WITH the publishers. Not selling work of scanlators without their say in it. As in they would be working as an employee with the publisher for the purpose of selling their product online - legally.
3) Everything would have been voluntary.
4) No translations or scanlations would have been used without the prior consent of said party. It was more a they would sign up to translate something and chances are they would have been able to do it For the publisher Legally and more than likely paid.
5) Any "influence" used to stop scanlations would have been done as per respect to those working on it, and as respect to the publisher. Up until that point there was no ease of access to digital content. With it possible of course it'd be a good idea to help get people motivated into buying the content.morten: After reading your "business plan" I got other insights...
We'll see what happens next... If you don't explain this, shit's gonna boil up and we have a new Tazmo...
njt: I'd thank you if you would keep things internal. Never the less, we'll be making a news post later today.
The whole business plan was based working WITH scanlators. Not selling their creations - not taking any translations that were released here and using them against their will or anything of the sort.
Our goal is to act as a bridge between publisher and scanlators - translators.
That way many new manga would have the fans working on it - with the publishers - legally to make a win win situation for everyone.

The more I read that announcement, the more I wonder whether they would have been better served by just lying and saying the document isn't real or it was part of an elaborate April fools joke that's gone horribly wrong. You'd think they'd use a more humble tone rather than go with the nutty "I'm doing this all for you!" speech.

i would be fine if viz tried to give scanlation groups legal permission to do what they do or even pay groups to add ads to the end of their scans, but to make MH a pay-per-view site is insulting to the scanlators.
the other thing that pissed me off is that the founder of MH had the audacity to say:
As you can see from spelling errors, grammar mistakes and the likes it is still in a very VERY rough form and extremely far from presentable. Why it was leaked at such a state is beyond me, but yet is has. And we are dealing with it.
the way he says that makes me think that he feels like he is innocent and he was wronged by the people who blew the whistle on him. that just pisses me off.
edit: i think he screwed himself over when he let his true feelings show with this:
By making what fans are doing legitimate, or at least finding a medium, we could have progressed so much further than being pirates leeching from the publishers.

So selling manga in book form is any different?

I'm going to just take back what I said and not comment...
If you've ever thought or said "Nice Guys finish last" and really meant it, then you should probably read this LJ post by DivaLion. It's incredibly insightful whether you're male or female.

Oh please. Who spent the time to write up the story and draw it? The creator(s). They deserve the money, which they get through the publisher producing and translating their books. Making money off of someone else's work without compensation is wrong. Sure they buy the buy the books, but that's pretty much one copy being reproduced and given to many people.

As long as they don't become another Tazmo or Crunchyroll by making people pay, then everything should be cool.
Hopefully.
