I would say: "Who cares."
Why does such a commotion need to be risen from it? D:
It should've been clear if anyone even read that book. :\

The hell? Are you going to make up a bunch of bullshit that in a roundabout way tells us why Dumbledore is gay?

I think it makes sense the way she outed him now. She designed him as gay but didn't bring it into the books, i guess because it doesn't really matter that much and because i am sure she realized the problems it would creat.

But lets be honest, the harry Potter books are pretty clear on the way most heros lead their love lives. Meet your true love in highschool, get married at a pretty young age, have children, stay together for ever, or never find happiness. True for Harry, Ron, Hermione, Ginny, James and Lilly, Rons Parents, and Snape, Hagrid and Dumbledore would be the ones never finding happiness. Its full of "Family Values", practicly loaded. That Dumbledore is gay is the only thing that could keep born again christians from demanding that their children read the books.

7th book spoiler

Did anybody have a sort of gut feeling there was something a little more than just friendship in the flashback of dumby and the grinwald(?) guy after reading it? Gay-dar if you will. I had a little one, but just kinda passed it off as me thinking too far into it,

@vince- It's so depressing that your right. the potential readership for this series pretty just burned it half

not everyone is that shallow about their view on homosexuals....honestly, a book isn't like a manga.....just because there's some details about a potential gay relationship doesn't mean that the book is alll about those stuff, unlike yaoi....i think there will be more people who is against reading the book because of personal opinions rather then their view on homosexuals....people are not that shallow these days, even christians......

@Cerulean I don't know where you live but I'm soooo there. People around me are pretty narrow minded. And i live in Toronto the poster city of diversity.

really? about the narrow minded part...

I thought the city (downtown Toronto) would be open minded. Of course my area (the farm-land) wouldn't be, since we have a lot of religions here.

I'd be furious if HP was banned from even more places for that reason. Like, she gave no hints of anything beyond friendship in the book. and an author is entitled to share her every thought on her characters whether it'll be "good" or not.

Rowling screwed up by confirming this info. She basically made herself and her books the target for hate from simpleminded homophobes and bigots. Harry Potter is likely to be banned from schools or burned by the religious right and so many children will no longer have the chance to read it. If it was that important to make sure people know Dumbledore was gay, she should have just left hints and let people infer it.

I'm pretty sure that the Catholic Church already banned Harry Potter (not 100% certain though) so Dumbledore being gay probably won't change much. As for the schools, I'm also fairly certain that nothing will be done except maybe extremely conservative private schools. Maybe it's just cause I live in California, but I have several teachers that are gay and no one really makes a big deal out of it. Also, Rowling has already stated that she doesn't care that her books have been banned. I think that she said she took it as a compliment, considering the company that puts her in.

Not completely sure, but extreme right wing conservatives tend to essentially hate all books that revolve around magic as a main theme, in part due to the fact that witches, wizards and the like are considered evil things by the die-hard christian community. Don't forget that these kind of people publicly executed people during the Salem witch trials way back when America was still in it's early years/decades/whatever.

And seriously, the fact of Dumbledore being gay is almost irrelevant to what he actually did in the stories. Personally, his sexual orientation never even came to mind when I read the any of the books, including the last one(though the only time I read it was to find out what happens storywise and not an analysis of all the events, etc.). But I highly doubt that this would effect sales of any of her books, and I doubt anyone would successfully take any action into banning it, simply cuz there are tons of people who are Rowling fans and it would look extremely bad for some like a politician to ban something extremely popular for a character in it being homosexual (unless that politician would happen to be in the center of an extremely conservative region.)

Polite bump.

Does it matter? It didn't affect my reading pleasure at all. And I think it was a smart move to say that statement after the book was released, so that people wouldn't boycott it.

tl;dr? ... What are you, lazy?! That wasn't long at all!
