Horror? Why?

Why do people like horror manga? I personally hate it with a steaming passion, but every time I ask for recommendations, the horror suggestions flow in. Can anyone explain this phenomenon of people gravitating towards the gore and such that is inherent in horror manga?

it interest me even though i never get scared from horror manga but it just gives another vibe to me which gets me interested on it
i was nervous at first it was big & long & went straight up i had to try it i eased onto it & liked it! i went up & down on it.... i love escalators now! 😀
(great onizuka ftw)
It's the same reason people like horror movies. In my opinion horror doesn't equal to gore and doesn't necesarily have to rely on it (best ones aren't necesarily the most gorishm, and gorish horror is more disgusting than scary). For me it's just a matter of taste, i find the genre interesting for the suspense and thrill more than the gore.

Also, horror's a broad genre. Just b/c something is labeled as horror doesn't mean it's all ghosts and goblins. School Days is labeled as horror and there isn't a monster in sight. Battle Royale, Bokurano, and Jisatsu Circle are also considered horror.
From Mangaupdates: Horror - A painful emotion of fear, dread, and abhorrence; a shuddering with terror and detestation; the feeling inspired by something frightful and shocking.
You probably get a lot of suggestions b/c there's simply a lot of them out there.

Ahem. I like gore and horror.
The first one tests your personal tolerance to violence, the second one tests your personal fear factor. "To test" probably is not the right verb. Maybe "to explore" is more accurate. Gore and horror provoke more psychological tickle and scenes depicted are more realistic (IRL when one gets hurt, s/he bleeds).
Practically speaking manga series from these genres point out possible mature and interesting content and it is easier for me to sort my readings. The themes are unusual compared to everyday life; strangely enough, they rarely rely on cliches heavily used in other genres.

If School Days is labeled as Horror, I'm a Jewish Nazi.
I know what horror is, and I know it does not just mean monsters and such. And a whole bunch of things that are labeled horror do not fall into the contemporary meaning of horror, which seems to center around gore (I cite the Saw series, as well as many other examples.)
As far as my suggestions, I explicitly state that I do not want horror, and then get suggestions like High School of the Dead and Jisatsu Circle.
I guess it's cathartic in a way, exploring the depths of one's own perversity, but I still cannot understand how one can find it titillating. It makes me angry, tbh.

^ Why does it make you angry? Other people's preference to these genres, the genres themselves, you are thinking they are simply trendy, or you dislike digging in pervesities?
I don't read horror much or even at all but I got into Rabbit Doubt. It's quite good.
It's not really the blood and gore I like (lucky for me there isn't much in this one) but it's more of the mysteries plot line I like.

@Esty: if that sounds like bashing, you obviously never seen a yaoi debate sigh.
I for one like horror because it's fun to read (yes, FUN. As in keeps me interested and is a good source of entertainment) and it generally tends to give stronger feelings than regular manga. Plus, it's a genre that doesn't go well with fluff, so it makes shoujo horrors a safer area.
Plus I read it sometimes to tests my limits when I want to see how far can mangakas go and how well can their stories creep me out.
Another plus in good horrors is that it must have good artwork, else the manga doesn't deliver the proper atmosphere, and that = FAIL.

I enjoy certain types of horror, but it depends. Horror gives easier access to a larger range of human emotions than other genres tend to, and can often have more interesting characters. It's not as though I can be scared by horror manga, but it's far from laughable like most horror movies are.
That said, it doesn't apply to every horror manga, and you can obviously find more complex things in other genres. Ultimately I think it's just about atmosphere and personal tastes rather than anything else. As to why your suggestions are constantly disregarded, I think it's that people just read the thread title and post rather than your actual request.

NightSwan also said that she wanted to peg me, once, but I'm not sure whether to take that as a compliment or a threat...

I'm not too big on horror manga in general either; unless it's psychological horror like say Homunculus. But I guess thriller would fit the bill better for that one.

Because horror mangas don't have love-love relationships, and often have great stories exm. Higurashi
