I think Zipang has naval combat. I'm not certain of how much as I only watched a few episodes of the anime, but it seemed like there would be a decent amount.
You could try Apocalypse Meow. Its about Vietnam not WWII, but there is a fair bit of combat in it. Also it takes itself pretty seriosly despite the fact that the characters are bunnies and cats.
