I couldn't find what I'm looking for via the forum search or the genre filters, so I'm not quite sure if there are actually any manga on this subject... Therefore any recommendations for other media are also welcome.

What I'm looking for are gender bender stories, true bender - not cross-dressing, where the gender of the lead or the love interest of the lead has been bent from female to male.
The cause of the bending is not really important, be it supernatural (i.e. possession), technological or magical.
The gender bending should happen during the story (during or preferably after the first chapter) and would also preferably be irreversible (or at least hard to reverse).
The love interest of the transgendered can either be the lead or a secondary character and is preferably male (so in effect you'd get shounen-ai), but female (straightish shoujo-ai?) is also allowed.
With special interest in how the characters deal with this, the romance partner doesn't have to know about the transgender bit.
Also, a 'happy' ending would be much appreciated... Reverting to the original gender does not constitute a happy ending in itself, no reverting is better.

It's important that the female character first gets established as a female (not necessarily feminine), otherwise it would just be a shounen-ai story with a silly and meaningless moral excuse.

I remember a random story about 2 childhood friend girls and its revealed the chick is a hermaphrodite(sp? W/e she's an inny AND an outy), and I think maybe an alien... if that'll work ill go find it... or maybe someone will remember it clearer than me.... think it starts with boku but not sure.... not rly much of a story and really short but this and the previously mentioned half life are the only ones I've seen that are even close to your desc x.x

Crap a few wires got crossed, but I think its Boku no Futatsu no Tsubasa... the female-female love interest is a little guyish if I remember right, but the female-male looks as female as you can get.... probably not what you're looking for but its the closest I can remember, sry x.x

Ya I went and found it alrdy and I agree, tis not great, but it somewhat fits and is the only thing I read which could x.x.... the ending blew and it was pretty subpar even before that :/.

Well no, from what I remember (and a quick scan of the description confirms it) it's about a hermaphrodite... sort of... that was initially (when young) thought to be male.
No gender bending, only slight cross-dressing and misunderstandings. Whilst the manga was not a total failure, I wouldn't call it particularly good either.

Futunari/Hermaphrodite is not what I'm looking for.

1/2 Prince, could be. From the description it seems to match my requirements for the most part. Hopefully this manga has some decent story development and romance, I'm not really a big fan of the typical shounen action/violence.

Sekainohate de Aimashou, is about MtF gender bender and therefore not what I'm looking for... Still thanks for tip, apparently scanlation was recently resumed.

Uh sry about not putting it up fast enough but I've got one that might fit, the moment when a fox becomes a wolf the title has no real meaning other than wolf=man fox=girl so its not as weird as it sounds, and while its not my favorite its not as bad as boku and fits in reasonably well with your categories.... 1/2 prince is actually both shoujo and shounen. It's more driven by comedy than action/violence like normal shounen, honestly. Its a big blend of genres. There is hints of romance as the story progresses. I hope you enjoy it. And the gender blending does occur in the first chapter, which was why I suggested it earlier. Definitely check it out. 😛

Boyfriend doesn't fit, tis mtf.... but its not all that bad and you should give it a try anyway 🙂 . Despite being shoujo cliche with the chars there is a pretty interesting storyline involved in it.

I.S. might work? Though it's more like she has female body but male hormones due to being born with both male and female parts, but having to remove her male part as a baby since she would have died. The main story doesn't start until a few chapters in. Although this probably doesn't really qualify for transgendered, they face some of the same issues as trans folk, I suppose.
