For reference, i like mato seihei no slave, girls of the wild, tall kouhai girl and short senpai (not really 'female protects male', but the female main here is dominating the mc), haite kudasai takamine san, claymore, akame ga kill.
The story doesn't need to be good.
If the female is average in the manga, the mc must be very weak
if the mc is average or fairly strong, the female must be extremely powerful.
