Why is it that in just about every series that's about school that most of the kids look 5-10 years older than they are? Elementary students that look like high schoolers and middle school students that look like adults. Not trying to be racist, but most Japanese people are small in comparison to Europeans, Americans and Africans. I wonder what they base these characters off of 😕
And yes, I know it's not trying to be realistic in most cases, but it seems like an ongoing trend.
I guess I'm too critical 😳

Maybe it's because people at that age crave to look older (hench the mangaka/tv series instructor/et cetera makes something the audience craves for, to make them buy the product)? And then it swaps later on. 😛

In the US for non-cartoon shows the actors as well are usually a couple more years older than their role. I've never really liked it. /:

Lol you should read Wolf Guy - Ookami no Monshou
They're all in middle school but they look like they could be 30+

Prince of Tennis

Took me like 50 chapters to realize they were all in middle school, even watching the anime first I thought they were all in high school. Its even worse in its sequel, they are all in high school now but look like adults xD

By the way, this is not a recommendations thread.

The OP wishes to know why children in nearly every school life series are portrayed to look a lot older, which personally, I believe to be a gross overstatement.

Shuji from Saikano looks more like a teacher...he looks a lot older in the anime.
I second Wolf Guy - Ookami no Monshou and Akumetsu, they look way older than their age.
and Red eyes. Gosh! I cant believe Mills is in his mid-twenties!

There's also mangaka that draw older characters that look very young. Like..other older men and highschool girls in Saikano.. lol.

Once again, I don't think the OP actually wants to read more series like this.

I myself don't think that they look so much older in School Life manga.

Man, especially Haguro. He's like... 🤣
I think it's one of those manga trends that are just unexplainable, but readers don't really mind (most of the time). It's sorta like those shoujo girl with huge, sparkly eyes. Or maybe it looks better that way, idk.

i dont really mind how they look like.. well they are a part of fiction and fiction is not entirely real..
its only as real as bumping into a transferee bishie student while youre running late while eating a piece of toast.. that just about as real as this things go.. 🤣 you can see how often that happens 🙄
