i always interpret that sentence as do your actions matter if no one knows about them

Yes they do, or do you live for the approval of others? 🙂

finally someone gets the point of this 😃

I honestly don't see why it's so difficult to understand that it's only vibrations through the air that the tree will emit untill someone or something interperates these vibrations into sound.
if you look at it that way, there wont be anything philosophical about it

i believe most if not all actions driven by the need for success will grant no self satisfaction unless we compare said actions to the achievements of others or blatantly flaunt them

That might be true for the most part, but it's also besides the point.

Drive is not important, the question is: Would you act the same whether you are alone or when others are around"

If I were to rob someone whilst knowing that no one will ever find out... Does that mean it doesn't matter?
Of course it does, I would have to live with that knowledge/experience for the rest of my life. It would also influence the kind of person I am.

Everything you do has an effect on the self, witnesses are irrelevant.

if everybody you knew were thieves you would rob without feeling guilt
most of your actions are determined by others thus most of your action are for others

Not so, moral compass is a separate issue and only changes the effect a certain action has. Since we're not talking about a specific action, the point is moot (Even if you were to reverse the magnetic poles, they would still both exist).
Still, even if you were living in a society of murderers and thieves, every action you do still determines who you are... Others knowing about it doesn't change this.

If I were to tell you something is normal, and you would do that thing, You wouldn't be doing it for me... You would probably be doing it to 'fit in', thus doing it for yourself.
Even if you are doing something to please someone else, you're doing it for yourself (to keep yourself safe - fear, to get something - i.e. material gain or to simply feel good - gratification)...

P.S.
We are getting a bit off-topic here 😛

i agree with you all actions humans do are for selfish reasons like the ones you mentioned
the reasons are a constant in almost all humans the actions are not
i thinks actions that are not driven by necessity such as getting good grades or buying a luxury car or even simple things like wearing cloth bring no self satisfaction unless others view them as something good and most adhere to that view
effect on self is determined by other people thats my argument
i feel this is turning into the chicken and the egg debate

You, like most of us, were fooled by the title. 🙂

Precisely! Everything in this world exists entirely separate from our perceptions. (And I think it's selfish—but innately human—to think otherwise. It makes us feel better.)
