CNN Health - The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is going to implement graphic as well as new textual warnings on all cigarette packages and even ads. Some examples can be seen on CNN's page.

Opinions? Do you think this will be effective?

Of course not. People know that smoking is dangerous. Children know that smoking is dangerous. A graphic warning? More like a waste of ink.

it make cut back on the amount of people smoking a little bit but i feel like it won't make much of a difference because everyone already knows cigarettes are dangerous. its an addiction, and once people are addicted its hard for them to stop.

personally i don't like the graphic warnings. i don't want to see those images. even though i don't smoke people around me might pull out a package with one of those pictures and it'll just disgust me

Well, I don't know how much an effect it will have, but I do think that a disgusting picture is a lot harder to ignore than text, so I support the idea. A picture has more punch.

May be it would prevent children not to try cigarettes.
But I'm pessimistic, the already smokers would stop because of that. The graphic images aren't gore at all. Tough I'm not a smoker but I could imagine I just smoke and ignore the images.

We've had it in my country for a while. Not particularly effective as a deterrent.

It's probably going to desensitize those that actually buy the product; so , it would not really matter if they use the images of graphic nature or not.

They already do that in the UK.
Somehow I don't think it was very effective, but I don't know the stats. Maybe it has been.
Most smokers already know the consequences anyway.

If People get disgusted over the images, then it works :\
It may not affect all smokers, but I'm pretty sure it has made some realize what they're doing to themselves.
There's nothing you can do about the stubborn ones.

Anything that makes smoking less socially acceptable is ok by me.

Maybe it won't make the smokers think twice, but if the people around them don't want to see the graphic warnings, that can be a discouragement from smoking as well.

Even if it's not a big effect, if it stops some kids from starting smoking, it's a good thing. 😐

Smokers are in denial.
It won't help.

If people know the dangers of smoking then why do so many people do it? A half a million die from smoking related causes. I was able to compile a list of how this is so:

A: People have a painfully slow death wish.
B: They know the risks and don't care.
C: Got hooked without fully knowing the dangers.

Does anyone have anything else to say?

We've had them for years here in Australia, I actually can't remember a time when they didn't have those warnings. Dunno how effective they are to smokers, but every time I see one of those images it makes me glad that I'm not a smoker.

Pictures? Maybe if you rigged all the boxes with a big electric shock...actually I doubt even that would do much.

I don't really think these new images will make anyone stop smoking. I was never really bother by the warnings on my cigarette package
But what really shocked me was when the price got higher and higher. When I bought my last package I was so shocked when I saw the price I had to pay. 🤢 Since then I quit smoking and I think the only way to make people stop smoking is to strike them were it hurts. You can ignore images, text and anti-smoking publicity but there is no way they will ignore the price they have to pay for their cigarettes. they should just make them unaffordable
