"Ventrilo is a popular proprietary Voice over IP program with clients for Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X. Most users of Ventrilo use a headset or microphone and use the program to talk freely to each other, similar to a telephone conference call." - - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ventrilo Yup thats about it ^_^ my friend has a server and we've been using it since like middle school. 🤣

So some of you guys don't like IM because you get disturbed? If you're "invisible" you sure won't be disturbed, but you can still jump your friends 😛
Personally i prefer IMing over the telephone. Currently I use trillian and i'm quite satisfied with it, because it combines many different protocols in one client, and it is even more functional than some of the standard clients (e.g. no ads).

I use AIM, because that's all most of my friends use. Not enough of them use anything else.

Main protocol is AIM and MSN. Some people are important, most of the people are annoying. Typical annoyance:
OMG HAVE YOU EVER HEARD OF SHOTA?
Yes...
YOU WANT SOME? ITS PRETTY GOOD.
No...

I run Gmail all day so I get a lot of chats through there.
I use skype too cuz it automatically saves chats. Also I can call other skype users for free and video chat. I like to call people on skype because I can record the entire conversation as an MP3. Can save video chats as AVI too.
Life is tough......but it's tougher if you're stupid.

Google Talk FTW!
(The only services provided by benevolent companies that you listed were Google and Skype, and Google will eventually own the interweb)

IM is for those people with nothing else to do. Like the people in clicks.

I thought that for a while, but as long as your not one of those "so desperate to IM that you resort to text messaging on your cell phone in school" types or the "I live through the day to go home and IM my friends" types then its really ok to use instant messaging.
It really does have a fair amount to offer, mostly in the way of just talking to your friends when you are at your computer and want to share links to hilarious websites and stuff.
whatever i dont' have to install, which is only aol, yahoo, and gmail right now o.o
