the month does represent something. chinese zodiac can be very detailed if you care to look into it.

wikipedia has one version of it if your interested but not 100% sure of its accuracy.

2 or 3 = Water
4 or 5 = Wood
6 or 7 = Fire
8 or 9 = Earth

Examples:

1996 = Rat of Fire
1988 = Dragon of Earth
1943 = Sheep of Water.
