The elements are based on the years. All the years which end in 0/1 are metal, 2/3 water, 4/5 wood, 6/7 fire, 8/9 earth.
If you're a snake you can be 1941 metal, 1953 water, 1965 wood, 1977 fire, 1989 earth (don't think you can be older or younger 😛 ).

Elements are also related to some other stuff, like planets, colors and seasons. Wood is related to spring anyway (I only know wood 'cause it's mine).
