A pen name can be anything per definition, even a totally weird fantasy name (e.g. Oh! Great). It's not in any way related to ethic or gender (there are many female authors with a male pen name and vice versa).

So, don't listen to these idiots. If you'd take Bunny-chan as pen name, would you get into debates with the PETA? 😀

Worse than using a Japanese name is saying that you're a mangaka. I hate using this term for western authors. They're manga-influenced comic authors, not mangaka.

I pretty much agree with you about everything else. You can still be a comic artist and use your own name or a seudonim.

A pen name can be anything you want it to be surely. I mean if we start limiting westerner to western names how long before we say that you must be from the country of origin to use the name? People have been stealing names from different countries for hundreds of years so I say ignore them. I don't have a pen name for my writing but my internet alias is derived from Lord of the Rings (it's elvish and me and my friend were a wee bit obsessed way back when and the name kinda stuck, lol). Ok it makes me kinda sad but it's just a name.

The pen is mightier than the sword...and considerably easier to write with.

But... what is the reason behind her pen name other than to sound japanese. Maybe if there was a point to it. Technically you're right but there's something wrong with someone just faking a japanese name for no good reason.

Plus a pen name should be something you'll be using to build a reputation. Or to hide your reputation. It really just looks like she's wannabe.

I know that sounds cynical but it's true. I don't know if there is a story behind it, or what the reason is, but that's how its going to hit people. And you can't say people don't matter, because that's going to be her audience.

Mangaka just means the author of comic writers and manga just means comic, whether it's Japanese or not. If you take no issue with using Japanese pen names, I don't see why you would take issue with calling Western comic book writers mangaka. It's just as pretensious (or not) as refering to yourself as -chan when you're not Japanese.

Edit: As for my personal feelings, I think it's lame but most pen names are pretty dumb so it's not worse than any other name. I mean, my own screen name is dumb as well (it's the account name of my old Diablo II account, been using it since junior high).

There's a huge difference in usage of terms. A pen name is (mainly) free of any restrictions and identifies a single person alone. So you can freely choose what you like within the borders of local law.

But a job description is bound to a more specific definition. In this case, a manga is a Japanese comic produced for the Japanese market. That's simply not what the manga-influenced comic published in Germany by an German comic artist is. It's merely sharing a style that was adapted from manga but it ain't one. This is not only my personal opinion but a set definition. It's the same for anime, Avatar is an anime-influenced animated series and not an anime.

As example, I do not call an American manga to be a bédé just because the style is closer to French comics as to American ones. A flashy term is selling better but that doesn't make it more correct.

As for the '-chan', I find it acceptable within the fan scene. It's the same as any fan terminology be it among Otaku, Trekkies or Tolkien-worshipers. That's not comparable to officially marketing a term wrongly to the broad public.

Pen names can be whatever you choose no matter what language it be in.

Edogawa Ranpo made that his pen name since it sounded like Edward Allan Poe.

I see no reason why someone couldn't take any pen name they want.

I actually go by two pen names NocturnalKami and Tsukiko when doing anything with writing or drawing. Since Tsuki is moon and ko is child I thought it fit with my always using Nocturnal in my screen names. It's sort of an inside joke for me.
But we all use pen names for different reasons so it all boils down to the works your putting the name to are more important then the name you use. It's not as if you're claiming someone elses work or claiming to be someone. If people like it they like and if they don't they don't. If they do then they'll know to keep an eye out for the name you used (^.^ )
Plus with the net soo many people who post their writings and drawings and manga/comics a unique pen does help from overlapping with others. 😀
