Takeshi Obata is my favorite artist, his work on Deathnote and Hikaru no Go are awesome, especially the artbooks, which feature beautiful handdrawn and coloured art. I also really love Ai Yazawa because she draws emotion so beautifully, and her detail is amazing.

But out of those two artists, their best work is Deathnote and Nana respectively.

But to tell you the truth I love Japanese art a LOT so I can talk about the many other artists I fancy (I have a lot more)...I spend a lot of time wishing I had enough money for artbooks 🙁

Best drawn?

I'd have to say most work done by CLAMP. I was surprised to see that not that many mentioned these amazing women yet o.o

Their art changes a lot and some of their characters are similar, but there's no doubt CLAMP is amazing. I've fallen for so many of their characters, it's not even funny ^.^'''

My other favorite mangaka are Yuu Watase, Matsuri Hino, Mikiyo Tsuda/Taishi Zaou, and Eiki Eiki. I love all the manga they do! I just find the art amazing! I read as much work as I can from them, so I reccommend pretty much all their work.

Yuu Watase is awesome. Even though her stories can be a bit too cheesy and her main characters all have, like, the same soul (or something along those lines), her style is so great and beautiful; sometimes it's just breathtaking.

Matsuri Hino is wonderful. Sometimes her artwork is simply the best. I especially love the way she draws eyes.

Mikiyo Tsuda/Taishi Zaou and Eiki Eiki...I just [u]love[/u] their style. It's so similar, but I still absolutely love it.

Best realistically drawn?

Probably work done by Takeshi Obata and Masakazu Katsura. I haven't actually read Death Note, but from what I've seen, it's pretty awesome and realistic. I've only read Katsura's I"s, but I really enjoy reading it (and that's pretty crazy cuz I'm a girl and those who read it will understand what I'm talking about when I say that >.>...). The art and the story is almost too realistic for me 🤣

BTW, somebody mentioned Kazuya Minekura (the mangaka of the Saiyuki series). Her artwork is...interesting, like Fake's Sanami Matoh, but I still really like both their art. Anyway, I just wanted to point out that Kazuya Minekura is a woman >.>...

Someday's dreamer (art by Kumichi Yoshizuki) is considered as very nicely drawn works. Just look at the cover and you can't resist to pick it up.

Similarly, Yokohama Kaidashi Kikō (by Hitoshi Ashinano) scores very high (for me) for the scenic design, blended with the feelings in the world, fully impressed.

Reiko Okano and her famous Onmyouji, nearly stunned by her works. particularly how she drew the mysterious Abe no Seimei and his 'daughter'. Also the way she tried express the old japanese ghosts, monsters, and everything in the Heian period of Japan, like clothes, vases, utensils, houses...., in such a beautiful way.

Other stylish mangakas
Crying Freeman and works by Ryoichi Ikegami was very profound in anatomy in the 80-90s manga. The body works are so real and naturally attractive. The weak point is the faces of the main characters in every series are nearly the same.

Tsukasa Hojo is another mangaka I love in the 80-90s. Family Compo , City Hunter, Cat eyes, Angel Heart. Lovely characters.

Masakazu Katsura was nearly top at drawing lovely girls. But many new mangakas are very good at it now, from hentai to regular, the list will never end 😛

CLAMP shouldn't be forgotten for their well illustrated characters. Although most of them are shoujo, but it's generally attractive to both sexes.

Ai Yazawa, just look closely at her fashion design, how beautiful.

Takeshi Obata's drawings attracts most people, composite of modern sense, most important, without the need of sexy figures.

Kubo Tito for Bleach's character design is also great. It's hard to design so many cool characters with different styles and in human shape.

Hoshi no Koe (art by Mizu Sahara) - the manga adaptation did not fail the original anime.

Good witch of the west (art by Haruhiko Momokawa) - all characters are so well drawn. Instead of something cool, the artist chose a very balanced and feminine style. (not the big eyed shoujo style 😛 )

i'll choose GTO, Great Teacher Onizuka as the best well-drawn manga 🙂

I think Tite Kubo's art is amazing. Very cool!
Takashi Hashiguchi also draws beautifully. His action scenes are so awesome. Of course I've only read Yakitate Japan! But I hear that his other series Windmill shows a lot of artistic promise. I like artists who grow with each series 😀

Hmmm...Kaoru Mori.....I don't know why I like her so much..but her drama "Emma" kept me up most of the night reading. Her art is just so insightful.

Do doujins count? 😕 if so then i would say Himura Kiseki's Sword Dancer has nice art with with superb fighting scenes.

Also the latter volumes of Watashi No Messiah-Sama have an interesting redesigning of its characters.

Dogs: Bullets and Carnage and Goth both have nice contrast. Goth especially has beautiful contrast in my opinion, but it has some morbid scenes.

Ah My Goddess in the later volumes have great art.

Bride of the Water God has really nice pictures. It makes me jealous every time I read a chapter. 😛

Kaori Yuki (Angel Sanctuary and Fairy Cube especially) and Clamp (CCS, Tsubasa RC, and xxxHolic) are good artists too.

I would say Death Note, it's just gorgeous. I love Clamp too.

well, i think you guys are naming the most popular AND well drawn characters here, from my opinion....

i say, the most well drawn manga in my opinion is berserk...
god damn, thats just some masterpiece art of work and story...
though i say akira was the most originated...
i love that 45% downward angle sketch, thats a masterpiece,
inspiring the most popular mangakas today, such as
akira toriyama which he inspired kibo tite and the guy who drew
naruto and one piece i believe.

One Piece, Just because its different doesn't mean its bad. I personally love it~ Mashima Hiro liked it so much, his current piece, fairy tail takes heavily after One Piece.

Akira has the best art I've ever seen in my life. Otomo-sensei has an unparalleled, powerful, vivid and cinematic style like no other artist in the industry.
