I'm missing RAW provider: Person who hunts for RAW files and provide them to scanlation groups. It's differen from the scanner because he doesn't scan the files 😛

A PSD is a Photoshop specific file, although some other programs can open them, they are made for and work best with Adobe Photoshop.

PDF files are mostly associated with Adobe Reader. They usually contain text forms, and sometimes images. Alot of ebooks are made in this format. Photoshop can also open these documents, especially if you don't have Adobe Reader installed.

That's the difference, basically.

There are tons of sites that host raw manga out there. I don't think that they're that easy to find, but it's possible.

...I don't know much about translating and scanlating groups, but it seems like some groups (not naming anyone specific) sacrifice quality by releasing LQ scans and not using a proofreader. Maybe they're just trying to release speed scans, but personally I'd prefer to wait an extra week and get a scan that is both literate and clean.

I understand that translating is extremely important, but translator /= proofreader, and from what I've seen, some groups lump those two jobs together.

hm.. well i guess the photoshop thing would depend.. but when i proofread.. i just read the scripts.. i would also say that they should at least know a little bit of the storyline they are proofreading to make sure the story flows right..^^"

i also download the raws sometimes to understand what the chapter is about. since i proofread for mostly manhwas (aka korean comics/mangas) and i'm korean its pretty convenient =] if i find something a bit off or i don't understand, i just look back to the raws and rewrite the sentence. ^^" but when i have to do chinese translations.. ehh.. well since i already like the manhua and read it.. its fairly easy to work with =3 just saying that if you know the storyline its so much easier to proofread

about scanlators:
-do they have a hard copy of the manga and then scan it..?
-are they require to buy a new volume/manga?

about the raw provider:

• where do they get the raw online?

General question:

• how will you know if the manga is not yet been taken by a scanlation group?

Not really sure about this question...The scanner has a hard copy, scans it, and usually hands it over to the scanlation group (online). If this isn't the answer you're looking for, maybe reword your question?

Also not 100% sure about your question. Only the scanner buys the manga, or is subscribed to a magazine. Or the person that funds it will buy the manga personally and send it to the scanner. The only time scanlators don't buy their own copies are when they want to use already scanned raws that someone else scanned.

  Various sites. There are a lot...I know mangahelpers has raws, and mangashare (?) and raws are also passed around in forums. There are probably a lot of underground places I don't know of, and I haven't really looked into it...I don't think there's really a specific site that hands out raws, though.

General question:

• how will you know if the manga is not yet been taken by a scanlation group?
  O.O Baka updates. And because there are so many scanslation groups, it's impossible to tell if a group is planning on it unless you visit their site, so unless it's a series like Naruto where a bazillion different people scanlate it, you shouldn't really worry if someone's doing it already...

haha.. about the scanlator, my question was right.. i'm really wondering if these people do buy their own copy and share it to some scanlation groups...

about the raw provider,
then does it mean anyone can be a raw provider as long as they can provide raw scans? and even it has been edited by some groups already?
