I think we malaysians should scanlate the comics (i dunno why but its hard to call em manga). So guys...lets cooperate together..lets scanlate ben's comics...etc for the world to see. (well, i dunno if what i suggest is already been done or absurd or what...)

Try the Recruitment section, if your going to start a group for malaysian comics, you would get a better response there.

haven't read anything from malaysia for awhile now. what kinda comic are you referring to anyway? the old school cartoony ones like the ones in gila-gila (man, i miss that), or the new generation ones like in gempak? honestly, i'd rather have the classics. it'd be kinda fresh and new.most of the newer generations is just trying TOO hard to emulate japanese style art and story telling, which kinda killed it. not to mention most of em' are limited to a small number of pages per issue, so at most times, it's hard trying to get into the story....
otherwise, i guess it wouldn't hurt to try. for the new gen, if its a freelance artist who can at least do 15+ pages, it's worth giving it a look...

Mind if I say huh and WTF? Are malaysian comics any good? I think its based on popular demand. If people wanted it enough then yea sure, I'll try it, but I dont think it's worth scanning if almost no one will read them.
Well, i think Kaoru's comic are nice.. or probably Ben's? (from Gempak of course)
oh oh oh... I think Student King is not bad.. very funny..

well, only a few handful that i admit are good. but thats only in terms of art. story wise, i'd say will disappoint a lot of people. y'see, most malaysian comics are published in magazines that are brought out bi-weekly, like the ones in japan. the only difference; it's 1/6th the number of pages. as a result, a single comic will last for only 6-8 pages. this in turn results in a rushed story, and/or a story one can never seriously get into due to the lack of character development. this is most especially true for stories that (supposedly) have a serious plot to it. comedies and short stories seem to be a more perfect fit in this case.
but checking out the website of one of these publishers (Gempak), it seems there are some who directly do tankoubons (i think), rather than publish it in the mag, and have it compiled later on. well, i can't be too sure, since its been years since i last read any. honestly, if you're gonna scan the ones from the mags, focus on the comedies and short stories that have no serious plot, like (i'm naming the old ones here) Jinggo, Oxer, Gengkey, etc. as for those that are direct-to-tankoubons, i wouldn't know really....
P.S: another thing to worry is the translation (does anyone from the west know what a satay/sate is?) as well as cultural references (Sunday is to the west, as Friday is to SE asia (most of the time...), and saturday over here, for some is a working day... ). remember those translation notes.

This is more like a question for an opinion, so I'm leaving it here for now.

well, for me, not all of em worth being scanlated. but ben's oneshots are kind of good (honestly, i'd just skip many comics in gempak like the ones by king kang...the soryline kind of sux...meh...). and i also agree that the classic ones are good like in ujang. hehe...actually my suggestion should be like this: "Ben's comics should we start scanlate them?" or Ujang's...

well, some of them are good and i'm quite fond of Ben's. Don't bother to kaoru's either and still reading Helios Eclipse. 🙂

You know, why not? If they look enough like manga, then I think that there are quite a few people that don't care whether it's really manga or not. And for every comic, there's an audience that loves it and another that doesn't, so go start a group.

Checked Helios Eclipse a while ago. Didn't like it at all.
The numbering was annoying...
If you have a scan group/wish to start one, say so, and this topic will be moved to the recruitment forum.
Hrodulf and Bjornolfr, you will not be forgotten.
