Manga and anime
Anime is definitly better for most shounens, mostly due to the fact that it is hard to follow the fights as it goes panel from panel in mangas.

I usually like what I read better then what I see.

I like manga much better.
A lot of anime is based on manga series.
While doing so they have to cut out a lot of little things or even big things to either fit it into the anime's twenty some min frame; such as omission of a character, change of dialogs, omission of minor events etc.
I love little details and it drives me nuts when they do that.
Example:
Elfen Lied: They took out all of the scenes depicting characters' wish to kill. I am referring to scenes where the mangaka makes you believe that a character has been killed (which usually makes the reader's jaw drop), only to find out that the "killer" was thinking about killing and have not actually committed the act.
Even worse scenario is a creation of an alternate ending by the animators because the manga is on going. While providing an alternate storyline can be interesting, animators don't usually write as well as the original mangaka.
Example:
Claymore: Fight between Clare and Priscilla created by the animators. IMO it was a terrible ending X_X .
They are like movies based on books. IMO books are, in most cases, much better.

many anime which adapted from manga suffer from many drawback, mostly because drifting away from original plotm, or artwork being done without including the original character designer.
however anime still posses some uniqueness. Imagine Macross without songs, it feel like something is missing. well unless you dislike jap song. There are also many good anime which later made into manga version, like Evangelion.
both are complimenting each other, you cant separate them.
