Related to your most recent poll.

Have you ever sung the lyrics of an anime’s opening/ending out loud, while not watching it?
(Even just a few words count)

Yes, on purpose
Maybe, but not on purpose. It was stuck in my head.
No, (at least not that I’d admit to)

I’ve sung quite a few songs in the second category, especially while cleaning.

Something related to the rating scheme used on this website could be interesting. Like what are people's go-to median score?

You've read a manga and feel mostly neutral about it (don't love it, but don't hate it either). What score would you give?

  • 9-10
  • 8
  • 7
  • 6
  • 5
  • 4
  • 3
  • 1-2
  • I only rate manga that I really love and/or really hate
  • I never rate manga

I've noticed that there's a lack of meta poll questions (just one about when people vote):

Do you ever vote in MangaUpdates polls more than once?

  • Yes
  • Yes, but only if I forgot I already voted
  • Yes, but only if it's a question I feel strongly about
  • No

Self-confessed "yes" because the two "yes, but" things apply to me.
I don't go out of my way to vote twice (clearing cookies, reloading, etc.) but it's more of a "browsing on a different device (e.g. phone)" sorta thing.

You've just become a mahou shoujo (MS for short) you are now:

-MS Original-chan
-MS Office Lady-chan
-MS Mother/Okaa-chan
-MS Granny/Obaa-chan
-MS Embarrassed Crossdresser-kun
-MS Trap-kun
-MS Okama-kun
-MS Pervert/Hentai-kun

Just to be super, ultra mega clear -chan = female, -kun = male, at least biologically speaking cause I don't want to be flamed for not being PC, since you never know

You're reading a series and its been several months since the last chapter dropped. Now a new chapter just released and you:

-jump right in (I remember whats happening)
-read the last few chapters beforehand (I just need a quick refresher)
-start over from the beginning (I can't remember the plot at all)
-drop it (I just don't care about it anymore/I have better things to read now)

Deus ex machina mechanics / oddly convenient solutions in manga?

-Love em
-Hate em
-They're okay
-Don't mind as long as they're good/creative

Example: hero meets a strong enemy, instead of using what they have (possibly in a new way) they just get a new ability/power/technique and that's the end of it.

Best example comparison I can think of off the top of my head is
non deus ex machina being early One Piece

with Luffy coming up with new ways to use his gum gum power vs. deus ex machina being Ichigo's powers in Bleach ! with normal shinigami -> bankai -> hollowfication

Opinion about manipulation techniques in manga (mind control/hypnosis, memory manipulation, puppetry/possession, drugs)

-Very disturbing
-Just another tool for the hero/villain
-Stupid and/or not realistic
-Love em
-Mwahaha just one word and s/he’ll betray them all
-Come on, fight it! Don’t let them control you!!!

Uhhh, not sure if it has been done
How do you feel about ecchi manga?

  1. ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT! Need it as much as oxygen!
  2. Only thing I read.
  3. Good to read sometimes.
  4. Don't mind it, but I don't read it.
  5. ABSOLUTELY HATE IT TO THE CORE! PERVERT!

I was scrolling through a bunch of manga, my choice would be #5, hate it

This old one

What is the most important translation quality required to keep reading?

  • Image quality (resolution)
  • English fluency?
  • Colors ballanced/clean image.
  • Font
  • The team translating it.

I just finished reading a couple of new manga chapters, so a couple of ideas came to me.

A copyrighted name is mentioned in the manga dialogue, and it's been blanked out by the original author. What should the translator do?
-Leave it intact to maintain authenticity (eg. "Poy")
-Change it to the actual thing (ex. change "Po
y" to "Pocky")
-Change it to a more generic version of the thing (eg. change it to "Chocolate Snacks")

Many magazine scans have extraneous pieces of text over the actual manga content. What should the translator do?
-Translate everything on the page. Every. Single. Thing.
-Leave it untranslated, they're usually not very important.

As an example of the above, I'm referring to things like "[Series] Volume 1 sold over 1 million copies! [Author] thanks you for your support!" at the beginning of a chapter, or "[Series] will go on break starting next week, and will continue on [Later Date]" at the end of a chapter.
