Quote from Nekomikoto

A character's face and gender is never shown initially and the original language does not use gender pronouns. Translator discovers the character turns out to be female, but it's not announced/shown until the later chapters. Until then, what pronouns should they use?

He/Him
She/Her
It
They/Them

...scanlator woes. Do you just assume male til proven otherwise, or go with female and spoil/foreshadow the reveal? Or go with a neutral route and sound awkward/grammatically incorrect...

Kinda strange but here it is:

Let’s say there was a pill you could take daily that stopped your hair and nails from growing while using.

Would you use that pill so that you could get the perfect length for your hair/nails and keep it?

-yes, if it cost less than what I currently pay at the barber/manicurist/salon/etc.
-yes, even if it costs more; going to the barber/manicurist/salon/etc. every X weeks is so annoying
-yes, my hair/nails are a nightmare to manage for whatever reason
-no, I enjoy trying out different hair/nail styles each time I go to the barber/manicurist/salon/etc.
-no, it’s unnatural
-no, I greatly enjoy the experience of going to my barber/manicurist/salon/etc.

If a manga series has very slow updates, do you:

A) wait for it to update
B) loose interest and drop it
C) I don’t start the series if i know it won’t update regularly

This is just to survey people's opinion and not to make a radical change regarding of the outcome.

Should we modify the "help wanted" section into "Help offered" section to avoid the same people begging for help week after week?

A) Yes, it will make the forum section more productive rather than have people constantly asking.
B) No, the forum is good as it is
C) undecided, would like to hear more ideas before implementation.

The still bestselling Walking Dead comic surprisingly ended this week in a move that dominated the entertainment news cycle. The creators even faked solicitations for future issues to leave retailers blindsided! Which begs this timely question:

When should longrunning comics announce the ending?
At least a year in advance
Half a year in advance
About 3 months in advance
In the next to last chapter
Without an announcement
I don´t follow comic news
I only read completed works

You read a series that ends up being mediocre and poorly written. Do you give the manga-ka a second chance with their future series?

  • No, their series is a general showcase of their writing skills
  • Yes, the manga-ka's abilities and story telling improve over time
  • Highly likely, could have just been one bad series out of many
  • Highly unlikely, it will take a lot of change to make me give them a chance

Tried to find middle ground here. If you can think of better responses, go right ahead.

I changed the options a bit, but the essence is still there

Along the lines of the current poll:

How many hours per week do you work on average?
(Including unpaid internships, not including volunteer work)

0 hours - not employed
20 hours or less - part time
32 hours or less - part time
40 hours - full time
41 hours or more - overtime
Varies too much - Self-employed or multiple jobs

How should translators deal with author self-censored curse words?

Only censor part of the word (i.e. sht)
*Censor entire word (i.e. bleep or ****)
*Match how the author censored it (partly or fully censored)
*Use the actual curse word (i.e. shit)
*Replace word for a less harsh one (i.e. crap)

How about: which do you think is the greatest factor in loving a manga? story, art, genre, category, previous works of the same mangaka, or tags ( etc)?

(I haven't been a member for too long so idk if this is an old idea)

I also think the tournament style for best characters or titles is a good idea 🙂)
