Slice of Life: A story revolving around the events of everyday life? I'd say it revolves around ordinary people, but in a lot of mangas the characters seem to be unique in order to make up for the fact that the story is about events that would not, by themselves, interest the reader.

Fruits Basket is also considered slice of life even though the characters have the zodiac curse. So I'd say "A story revolving around the events of everyday life." is more accurate.

Added slice of life. Will think about harem.

I just noticed...

Isn't school life 90% of the time a subset of slice of life?

Hmm, wonder how it'll go... Not too keen on having 2 genres being paired in every damn series, lessens the importance of a specific genre (like what I want to tentatively avoid with harem and romance)

Hope I'll be proven wrong.

Although school life might be paired with slice of life, slice of life is not always paired with school life. In my point of view, they're not mutually exclusive. School life is much more a setting. If there were many manga set on planes, I think "plane life" might become a genre, but it does not necessarily mean "plane life" makes "slice of life" its subject.

I see what you mean with harem being a subset of romance however. But I think its addition will only give you more options, and not take away anything. It's just really narrowing things down.

I don't even know how many harem mangas exist to make it a worthwhile addition though. 😕

I agree on the harem genre. It is indeed a subgenre of romance, but it's different enough from the classic romance to create a new subgenre.

I'm pretty sure that there are enough harem romance out there to make a valid genre.

The whole thing I was wondering was simply "is it worth to have both romance and harem listed in a series?" (and was wondering if school-life/slice-of-life was also creating the same situation) I was simply speculating that if we do have a harem genre, let it be mutually exclusive to romance so that people looking for non-harem romance have a tool available.

Unless, that is, that the "search by genre" selection box can also include an "X" with the checkmark, to indicate a "don't want this genre" option.

Hmmm...

Yea.. I was thinking about that.
