This saddens me quite a bit
Tokyopop had just gotten around to releasing Peacemaker Kurogane vol. 4 - which i had waited 7 years for, after ADV went under - and i've become very fond of Zone-00, which is also not the most popular manga in the world /:

That's the short.

I was more saddened when Broccoli books and CMX died, but it is a shame since it means more and more people will rely on scanlations which, while awesome, don't support the author. I don't know why the price English mangaso high, in some cases it's double the price just to get a translation, and sometimes the scanlation teams translate it better.

They need to minimise the editing so that the translation preserves as much as possible from the original script (I mean, a translator's side note isn't hard. I learnt all about honorifics from side notes) and they need to make manga affordable. In Japan, a recent volume of a fairly popular manga is 500-600 yen, 300-400 yen for older volumes or more obscure manga. You can get older volumes for 100-200 yen at used book stores, and these are well-known manga. In England I pay £7-8 per volume, that's 1000 yen, so double the price! It's crazy.

Tokyo pop were also really slow at getting manga out, if they ever got out.

I didn't like Toykopop. I dislike their translations, and honestly I didn't like most of their selection.

This tells me I better start buying manga from Viz more often, though. Now I will be upset if they go under.

I've always wanted to get into publishing. This absence of a major player opens the door for others to jump in. While I appreciate all that has been offered in the past by Tokyopop, this just might be opportunity knocking.

Not really sad over Tokyopop not being able to butcher any more manga, but I am sad at the fact that all of those people are out of a job.

That's probably the best comment in this thread loose.

Here's an interesting reflective post that sums things up from one of the OEL manga creators that worked with Tokyopop;

Also, can't agree enough with ya Loose. Here's hoping the other publishers pick the guys up.

Bleh. I never cared much for TokyoPop, the only beef I have about them finally going down is that they've licensed a few series that I like. I know I can read the majority of them online, but I like having the series that I absolutely love in my own hands (and preferably in English).
So as far as series I liked that they've published that will be gone now:
Tactics, Heart no Kuni no Alice, Deadman Wonderland, and Trinity Blood.

But. Eh. Hopefully they'll get picked up by another company, and hopefully all those people who are out of a job will find someplace else to work at soon.
And maybe 07-GHOST will get picked up as well. I know 07-GHOST is totally unrelated to TokyoPop in every way, but it fits in with my wanting the series to get picked up after their original English publisher hit the hay.

Thanks for sharing that link. Nice to know someone inside also disagreed with how TP was running.
