What story is that?

During some war of something, one small group captures another small group and took their rifles. Now, supposedly they tied them up and cut off their middle fingers, or trigger fingers and then parades around them with their middle fingers stuck up saying 'pluck you'. Guess what we got from it?

It was during th emiddle ages when England and France were constantly at war. The English would have the greatest Archerers and whenever the French would catch any Englishman they would cut off the index and middle finger so they couldn't draw the bow string anymore.

So whenever an Englishman would see a Frenchman, they would put up both fingers and say something saucy like "Wanker, sod-off, tea and crumpets" or something equally English to show that they still had fingers and one day would shoot an arrow through their little French heart.

The American middle finger is an evolution from that.

Question! How did we end up with 'obscene' language?

Don't know, but George Carlin might. Warning: obscene language lol

And another question: Why are glasses supposed to be geeky? What's the difference between geeky and nerdy?

huh. There's a difference?

Glasses are geeky because it means that that person reads a lot (make him/her need to wear glasses)... but actually, it's because he/she reads too close or without light. Watching TV too close also makes people wear glasses...

Umm... I do all of the above.

what...

I read a lot, and I do it closely and with little light at times. I also spend too much time staring at this computer screen. I do have glasses, but I don't need them all the time, they are only for when my eyes start hurting.

A quick search gave me these definitions.

A nerd is a technically bright but socially inept person.

Geek includes anyone with an obsession that places him outside mainstream society.

Wearing glasses was a misconception with being really smart therefore geeky since most smart people had different interests than the majority. IMO

There is a trend where people with higher intellect tend to be more myopic, therefore needing glasses. "Geek" and "nerd" are commonly used, nowadays, as terms to describe those that are brainy. Skittles mentioned the other reason.

The popular claims that reading too close or in the dark, and watching too much TV, etc. causes myopia is scientifically unconfirmed. I have a good friend who spends a lot of his day in front of the computer/TV or drawing/painting in somewhat dim light, yet he has 20/20 vision. Other than genetics, the factors that lead to myopia or hyperopia are still being researched.

Mmmmm... But soo yummy.

@tps: A hot dog is just the meat (sausage). You can put whatever you want on the sausage. For example: mustard, ketchup, onions, cheese, chili, saurkraut, pickles, relish.

I recommend chili and cheese. 😀

@shattered & cheesestix: companion question (sort of): Why are my eyes worse than everyone else in my family's?! I've got old lady vision, seriously.
