To all those who have recommended Resident Evil and Left 4 Dead I'd just like to point something out: Just cause it has Zombies in it doesn't make it scary. The horror of fighting for survival is not the same as being afraid of the dark.
OP asked for a scary game.He wasn't particularly specific on what kind of "scary".
I don't see the need to put down the suggestions of others here ._.

no, i haven't played a game scarier than dead space. All the resident evil, left for dead and whatnot series doesn't even come close. Trsut me ...when you see a shadow run across the wall infront of you and you turn around to only to see nothing whilst cotiously moving like a snail, wilst having your nerves shot. You will understand what a scary game is 🤣 The wanting of survival.
Oh and if you want it scarrier, The standard options are (hard mode + dark room).Dead space is miles scarier then any suggestion here. Sorry guys, If you play dead space for the first time...you'll love the intro. 🤣
Yes, this game can scare a group of people. If they are helping you navigate.
The whole game I felt like a walking tank. I'm a guy in a crazy looking suit who's killed everything that got in my way, with industrial strength MINING tools. Tools for cutting METAL and ROCK. What was there to be afraid of? I was the scariest thing on the damn ship.
Amnesia: The Dark Descent and the Penumbra series know what they're doing. Leaving you impotent, without a weapon to defend yourselves (barring the first Penumbra game) really makes you feel like you're at the mercy of the monsters.

Sorry I didn't mean any harm, it was just my way of saying that I don't think that those games are scary, no more then any other similar action game. Resident Evil haven't been scary since RE:3... It might breed feelings of panic but no "true scariness"
I just got the impression that it was more the feeling of Horror and being Frighted that was sought after and as I said, I don't get that kind of feeling from those games. Sorry if I sound harsh. 🙂

Its not about the situations. Its about how well the situations are executed my friend. If they are not executed well enough then its not worth my time. Dead space does its scares very well and the situations are executed just right...Play it on hard next time and try to get over the fact that it gives you a chance to defende yourself.
I recon all those fictional weapons just add to the "gameplay" aspect.
And i bought that amnesia game...Its sorta scary at first but the scares become a novalty after a while. The scares don't vary that much sadly. just you running in "fear" through out the game mostly. It can get boring after 4-5 hrs maybe less... Meh. gimme a break. dead space is on a different level to this low budget game.

I believe in letting people do as they wish, as do I myself. Sometimes, of course, what I wish to do is kill them and they do not wish to die. This gives life interest.

No one mentioned Siren? There was a remake called Siren: Blood Curse that was released for PS3. If you live in the US you can only get it by downloading it from the Playstation Store. It's a single player game but you could pass the remote when you switch to different characters.
Why am I sensing deja vu?

I play everything on hard. And if I did it again, it would be even less scary. Although, I'll admit, during the parts taking place outside the ship I was terrified of running out of oxygen. And the situations aren't very well executed. A monster appears in front of me, with enough light to see it clearly? Not a strong execution. The "I'm here" roar at first appearance cements my "this is just an action game with moody lighting" position even further.
