My favorite bands are Opeth,Children of Bodom,Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath.
I also like some melodic bands like Dimmu Borgir and Death.

I don't listen to much save for classic stuff like Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden and Led Zepelin. I find a lot of it to be very generic and simply unlikeable.

I took a bit from different branches. Dig pure and impure sound as well. Here titles I remember:
From doom - early Katatonia, from power - some Helloween (tried Blind Guardian but... that's fantasy). From black - Limbonic Art, Carpathian Forest (truly amasing. boogie-woogie and melancholy), Xasthur. From industrial metal- Godflesh, Ministry (of course). From avant-garde- The Wicked, Diabolo Swing Orchestra, Carnival In Coal, Mr Bungle.
There's also sludge (a lot of bands. try to find something with cool vocals).
Don't like folk, grind, death, female vocals.
I disagree. Post-industrial does exist. Really huge amount of totally dissimilar styles (too bad english wiki article is poor). The style can vary over albums, songs in the album, one song.

Metal is the only genre that is so divisive like this

I think it's more because people like so much to argue so much about what genres do which bands belong to.
To me jazz seems the widest, since I swear I never got the subdivisions of it, and often times, I have no idea if something is actually jazz or not.
Erm, back on topic. I'm currently on a doom metal spree (any suggestions?), but my favorite still remains folk metal, along with melodic death, black and female-fronted bands. Used to be mad about power metal, but now I'm bored to hell with it.

Give these a try, if you haven't done so already:
Black Sabbath (of course)
Vhernen (mainly instrumental)
Solitude Aeturnus (operatic vocals)
Mythic (disbanded, but all female group)
And check this site for more

These are my favorite metal bands :
Iron Maiden (First metal band I liked and the only band I listened to for a couple of years)
Yngwie Malmsteen (yes I play guitar and that's probably the only reason why i listen to him)
Buckethead (plays a lot of weird stuff but I still think he fits in here(Awesome solos))
Sabaton (good because they don't have those typical "power metal vocals")
In Flames (mostly early stuff)
Children of Bodom (early stuff here as well)
Kalmah (awesome )
Eternal Tears of Sorrow (awesome as well)
Wintersun (only one album released but it rules)
X Japan (mostly the albums Blue Blood and Vanishing Vision)
Eluveitie (I love pretty much everything from this band)

As far as metal goes for me. I can appreciate older metal if it's good, but I don't listen to it. Most of the "metal" bands I listen to are metalcore or some form of that such as:
Job for a cowboy, suicide silence, the acacia strain, as blood runs black, my children my bride, many more.

Protest The Hero - To this date they have become mathmetal.
Avenged Sevenfold - The second album contains lots of rock influence which I like.
I don't listen to metal that much anymore... It's tough to read when it's blaring.

I god damn love Power Metal, especially:

I love many other genres, but I listen to these two bands religiously.
