I reasearch and if the story seems good then yeah I'll reda a couple of chapters but if it's just too bad then off it goes.

You need a few chapters, you can't see everything in just one 😛

I usually look for a 3rd party opinion.

Generally, I find one of three things are true if I'm not happy with the first chapter.

1. It really is bad.

2. I'm not understanding the 'story' because I'm not approaching it from the right perspective or because I'm missing some cultural pieces/knowledge.

3. Many writers of all kinds simply cannot properly start a story. Things get better later.

Getting a 3rd party opinion will usually allow me to see which problem I'm dealing with. After getting said opinion, if I feel 2) or 3) is probably true, then I'll read a few more chapters to give it a chance. If it's 1), then I won't go any further.
