Who in their right mind would go ahead and write or draw something that would discredit their own country?

Americans do it all the time, I don't see why it would be so hard for a japanese manga-ka to create something that would put their country in a negative light.

Actually, there's a very famous Japanese actor who worked in China for films about the atrocities committed during WWII. When he went back to Japan, he got shit thrown on him and got threatening letter every day about how he discredited Japan in the film. It was so bad that I think he went back to China. Japan is still in denial and thus it is very dangerous to make any media that would put the Japanese in a negative light. Mangaka aren't heroes, they are normal people. They WANT people to like their work. How are they going to make money if they wrote the truth and everyone hates it.

Just give Japan enough time, I say another half a century and they will not be in denial. 😛

do you have no shame?

a "great manga"... MY ASS! >:-( >:-( >:-(

I believe this has somewhat already been used in a manga. You should check out Pumpkin Scissors.

Island (this might be a spoiler though... but it's been years since I've read it).

...just take a look at Shuusaku Endo's The Sea and the Poison? Heck, we probably have some Murakami Haruki fans on here, what else would you call the bits about Manchuria in The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle? There are plenty of decent literary works that at least discuss the subject by Japanese authors. I can't recall which incident The Sea and the Poison deals with explicitly, but it was based on a real case of human experimentation during World War II, and he's still respected in Japan.

And all countries basically do this. Japan's would-be "secrets" are just more widespread. The far right is a little bit more vocal than in most countries as well, though it's more about noise than actual political power. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

That shit is crazy and wrong on so many levels.
I have never heard about it before now though.

The only thing I can hope is that they actually kept the research or whatever so no one ever gets the dumb idea to do these experiments ever again. In a way the research may have been useful, but not at the cost of lives.

It would make a good manga. Someone trying to escape or trying to stop it from within. I don't see it anything different then manga and movies based on the concentration camps.

This isn't the first and probably not the last time people are turning their heads away from the ugly truths. Japanese don't need to suddenly grow some kind of mass guilt (even though some wouldn't hurt...and they do know how to apologize, just look at Toyota these days) but history is there to be learned from. Otherwise you'll just be repeating the same mistakes.

I feel absolutely astonished that I never even heard about this before. Am I the only one? But that is sick. And, for the sake of history, I hope that they seriously examine these bones and mass grave sites. You can only go so far denying these kinds of atrocities...

I havent heard of it until now either! I mean, I know about Nazi experiments and I assumed that they were not the only ones doing such things, but man, that's so aweful! No one has to apologize for it because they didn't do it personally, but no one should be denying that something so horrible happened. It's so disrespectful of the people who had to live and die through it!

yep... throughout human history and up to today horrible crimes against humanity persist

through some 100-150 years ago it was slavery, Manifest Destiny, Imperialism, etc

through some 50 years ago it was Hitler's Nazi's, Mao's Red China, Stalin's Purges, Countless other Genocides from ethnic nationalism, communism, and fascism, etc

today it's human sex trafficking, Communist China (Continuing and Covered up), North Korea, Tribal Oppression in Islam, Global Terrorism, child soldiers, Poverty, etc

the list goes on, but we have a duty as a species to try to stop it and recognize it where we can

Don't forget the China's Taiping Rebellion lead by some Christian dude who thought he was Jesus's brother. He lead an uprising that killed many innocent people who weren't Christian and resulted in the death of 20 to 30 Million people. The 1st most bloodiest war was WWII but the second was the Taiping Rebellion. WWI and the Americna Civil war are not the second. IT shows how human ignorance changes the world.

It's not just in those countries that terrible things happens. IF you know enough, you would understand there's a skeleton in every country's closet. Some so well hidden that you never hear about it.

Yep, some Chinese guy failed the Imperial Civil examination[The SAT of the ancient Chinese Dynasty times. You take it and some lasts 3 whole days. That's how they decide who gets what government position] 3 times. The guy went nuts. Then some Christian missionary tried to convert him to Christianity and he had a dream. And he thought that was a sign that he was sent by God to convert all Non-believers. At the beginning, all his followers were bandits and murders, and they killed a lot of innocent people. Then it got bigger and bigger and eventually the Imperial Chinese army had to suppress them. The conflict ended with a human causality count of 20-30 million people. So I said to my Catholic friends...:"So that's what happens when you turn into a Christian". Lol, a joke of course, but he took it seriously. 😀

Christianity is fundamentally about nonviolence, but due to human intervention[The church], the Originally peace loving message of Christ is changed. You think Jesus would have allowed the church to issue a massive crusade to invade Jerusalem? It was all about politics and profits and they used people's weakness[their ambition, racism, and violent tendency toward those who are different] for their own gain.

Not just in times of war. Often in times of peace, big country often go into smaller ones..... 😲 Then they justify it with excuses to police the world. Then they rename it a conflict and finally a war for the wrong purpose.

war still exist nowadays somewhere, just because you are living in a peaceful country, it doesn't mean that the world is in peace now, far from it.

as long there is human there will be wars, its our nature.

I sir, despise that statement. 😀 It is a common statement from a lot of young people, but they fail to take into account the fact that we evolve constantly. To say:"That's our nature" and leave it at that is to stagnant any ripples of progress. We need to change it to something like: "We can all change for the better, evolution proved it!". Surely you don't get a wife with a wooden club anymore?[allusion to the cavemen marriage ritual of hitting a female and knocking them out to mate. Could be call cavemen rape]
