in the vein of... ef: a tale of memories, sola, kanon, clannad, true tears, myself; yourself, school days or air.

ive tried stuff like kimikiss, tokimeki memorial, hitohira and others, but none seem to match up.

i think their plots are called crying games (funny, then romantic, then tragic, then romantic once again)

this can be expanded to non harem/moe anime if theyre REALLY good, like makoto shinkai's stuff or tokikake

Rumbling Hearts seems similar to what you are looking for.

The most similar to the ones you said is probably "Shuffle".

Other things that I can suggest you could be "Kimi ga Nozomu Eien" (more drama) or "Ginban Kaleidoscope" (more comedy, one of my fav). More school oriented maybe you can try something like "To Heart" (I don't like it though).

I third Kimi ga Nozomu Eien - Rumbling Hearts is it's English title

Also, my recommendation would be Bokura ga Ita

LOL, first time I heard it. That's almost as bad as italian translation of Slayers 😀

I'd recommend the manga rather than the anime. The anime focused too much on the comedy and ends right before they get to the drama/angst/emo part of the series

I know what you mean. They should have just stuck to the literal translation...

Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora is probably the best example of what you're looking for. It's not a harem, but it's still seinen and contains a lot of the elements it sounds like you're looking for.

If you like that, Iriya no Sora, UFO no Natsu will probably be enjoyable for you too. They're both 6-episode series based on light novels and have similar tones.

I don't know why it seems like no one has heard of either of them, they're both great.

Aww, that's not true. Don't know for Iriya, but Hantsuki is really good.

I didn't think of it 'cause when I hear kanon, sola, etc. I automatically go into "anime from a h-game mode" 😀 . Another one could be Shinigami no Ballad (though it's not as good as Hantsuki).

oh my god. Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora was exactly what i was looking for. that was fantastic. watchin iriya next.

btw i was (still am) lookin for touching romance that doesn't get too stupid, like some h-game adaptations, or too shojo. those were just the best anime that fit. shuffle... i only watched the first 2 episodes, but it didnt look too good. ill try finishin it tho

I second Bokura ga Ita. ;3

It would've been great if they had animate a Season Two since the manga is far from over.

I'm glad that was helpful.

Shuffle does get better later on. It stops being quite so generic-harem-y and gets a bit more dramatic for the ending. Can't say I'm a huge fan of it though.

It occurs to me that Elfen Lied sort of fits, but it keeps a tragic ending and is a bit more disturbing than most of the titles listed here (I would consider the ending of School Days to be more tragic than it.)

Then I really suggest you again "Ginban Kaleidoscope".
