Do you have actual intellectual discussion when you have a conversation, be it in text or vocally, or do you usually speak of superficial matters?

Ditto, for the most part. A balance is always better- being serious all the time is vastly overrated.

That said, I don't make small talk very often, IRL at least.

NightSwan also said that she wanted to peg me, once, but I'm not sure whether to take that as a compliment or a threat...

I personally think small talk is asinine. If I'm going to have a conversation, I want it to either lead somewhere, or to glean something useful from it.

I dunno. My friends and I talk about the ethics of sex robots, how gross giving birth is, and marvel at the gigabytes of porn that one of them has on his computer.

Is that intellectual or superficial?

I personally that once someone delves beyond the surface of any subject, it ceases to be superficial.

By your logic, most conversations are intellectual.

Not true. Discussing the looks of someone's myspace layout, what clothes one likes, etc, is all superficial. Once someone states the reasoning behind their opinions, and another person in the discussion expresses dissidence, intellectual discussion occurs.

Therefore, in a situation where everyone agrees and there is no controversy/conflict, intellectual discussion cannot be achieved.

What about to people discussing art styles, textures and the like, yet they both agree with the other person's opinion? Is that not intellectual?

There are not two people in the world who agree on all facets of a certain subject, even if those people agree on most of them, or share like tastes.

If the discussion does not describe something in depth, and simply states various parts of whatever the subject is without any real discussion or explication, then it is a superficial discussion.

Intellectual discussion is a module for education and should be treated thusly. A conflict or discrepancy drives this educational experience by creating a need for resolution. If one person is less knowledgeable in a certain subject, their ignorance is cause of conflict.

Amen to this. I gotta meet more people that think like this. The less mind-numbing, useless talk the better.

Places I'll almost never be. Even if I was, I care far too little to worry about small talk. I'm also fairly sure the ones in my area wouldn't care about the topic so long as it remained civil.
