the snes version would be easier to run(though some stuff from later versions is absent) and dejap has a translation patch for it as well(they added a few jokes too) or just the american gba version

Nah the psx verision is much better. better graphics, the combat system has been made better , skits and much more.
So I recomend the PSX more than snes even if the snes one is good to. But the gba is junk the american dub is so crap and the game is much slower.
It shoud be pretty easy to get in working on ePSXe emulator and its and you can find the game to DL from Snesorama.

Maybe try something like Portal? Dont know what genre that really falls into, but I'd describe it as a first person puzzle game.

Oh yeah, Vanillaware games are also good...they have really great RPG like plots but different gameplay from your ordinary RPG...namely:

Odin Sphere and Grimgrimoire

Highly recommended:

Sierra games like Quest for Glory series, Gabriel Knight series, etc.

Visual novels like Ever17, Narcissu or Kana, Tsukihime. Not all of them are dating sim games and they're really good.

Go buy the game Mount and Blade. It is a really fun indie game that is unlike anything you have ever played. Its cheap too!

I wonder if there are any genres left. People seem to be giving you specific games. But play Tales of Symphonia (story could be better, but the puzzles are addicting) if you havent' already.
