I recently got into One Piece and read about how a majority of Japanese adults read it. I wanted to share my thoughts here.

When did everyone here started getting into One Piece? What do you think makes One Piece appealing to everyone?
I got hooked because of the friendship shown by the Straw Hats.

I grew up with One piece. I started reading OP in 1999..when Luffy and his crew has just entered Grandline.
Before I discovered the online chapters at msnonepiece group in 2004, I mail-ordered One piece mangas by filling in ripped order forms from the mangas I bought because I wasn't familiar with online shopping..and my parents helped me out with the postal orders.
And when I found the online chapters, OP was around the Davy back fight arc..I remember the first online chapter I read was the part where Luffy drew an ugly flag for the Foxy pirates! ^^
Even now, I live my days waiting for the chapters and anime episodes. Spoilers on Wednesdays, scanslated chapter on Thursdays and Anime on Sundays. I love One piece, I will make my children read one piece and I know..when that DAY comes, I will cry my eyes out when One piece ends. 😛
This is coming from a 26 year old HARD CORE OP lover. 😃

its probably because the manga itself has been going for a while, hence the audience has grown up with it... that and the pure awesomeness of it. 😀
I only started reading the manga a year ago, and the anime a year before that. I'd seen the dub version of the anime b4 which put me off it really, 4koma absolutely ruined it. I'm glad i picked it up again.

I think of the 'big three' shounen series in Jump right now, I just like OP the most. It's weird because a lot of shounen titles aren't super appealing to me, but OP...I mean, it's about pirates ffs, how often do you get to see a manga about pirates? And it's a good one, too. I really don't usually like super long journey mangas, but this one, for some reason, is special to me.

I've read around 200 titles about pirates, (including the space variety.)
I'm not a huge fan, I've always preferred the less mainstream works. It's a good manga, and extremely exciting and funny, but if I had to compare it to something like Akumetsu, Akumetsu wins by a mile.

I have to agree, but the only reason I wouldn't like a mainstream manga is because people tend to overhype them to the point where when you read them, you just think, "This is it?". When I tried to read Naruto and Bleach, that's exactly what happened.
Also where's your sigpic from? It's vaguely familiar.

I get the same feeling from reading Naruto & BLEACH. These days, the only Shonen Jump titles that make me smile are One Piece and Gintama.
I'm reading mostly seinen material.

I got into One Piece about 5 years ago. Back when the series was around the Enies Lobby saga. It isn't the best manga, but it is certainly one of the most entertaining, which is why it is consistently keeping its fans and attracting more readers. One Piece has this sort of barrier that won't let it go beyond of it's lightheartedness. However, it's one of its fortes. It doesn't try too hard to be deep like Naruto.
Seinens are more thought provoking and more thoroughly done, which is why I believe a lot of them in general can beat Shounen series. It's kind of like reading something from a philosopher and reading fantasy and fiction. Surely, one can be more entertaining, but Seinens have more impact in general, and that's what I believe defines quality manga.

I don't know why, but maybe because it's in the "big three", but its characters and its art are both quite unique. Its backgrounds are intricately drawn, yes, but I think its the characters that bring out the story most. Their differences make up for each other, and it melds the plot into a very smooth flowing story. Not like some other manga, One Piece, I feel, has more continuity between arcs. The characters are generally the same, from chapter one to 500, and that's worth complimenting as well. How many shonen manga characters have changed in personality just to fit the story? One Piece has been the manga I looked forward to since I first saw it, and it remains so.

Mine is certainly usual for people only readed Naruto and Bleach those days (5-6 years ago) and saw One Piece on popularity list in onemanga, i tried said wtf? how can this crap be in the top 3 but i preserved as i thought it has to have a reason, kept going till usopp arc was like ok decent but not that great but i kept going as it had a strange attractive powers till when Sanji was introduced and the battle between Zoro and Mihawk (short but still awesome as we get to peer into Zoros past) at that point i could not turn back as i wanted to read/watch more of this diabolical manga/anime and with more arcs to come the art got better and better (got used to it in loguetown) and when i check back from the current chapter to the first you can see the great and amazing improvements oda has made, the story mindblowing the art amazing the characters just great, and they are actually useful when compared to other manga which just power ups the main character and ignores the others that were made, not going to say any names but a certain Rock Lee was one of my favorite char but was ignored after 1-2 big fights which made me 🙁
May One Piece live long and prosper! V

[the first couple of chapters are boring it gets good first with namis story arc...Arlong Arc? i think]

The Graph I saw was not very accurately spaced, and makes sense when 1. Readers were 15-20 when they started now they are much older.
and 2. It was a graph of who BUYS one piece, not who reads it.
