Lol, interesting.
Shows how different the teens interests are in the U.S. or other English speaking countries compared to Japan's.

The first time I was exposed to one piece was seeing the dubbed and edited anime version back in 2005. Back then I had no idea what manga was and decided to drop the series based on the butchered anime I was exposed to. Then a little while later a friend told me how great it was and I couldn't believe him until he told me about manga and how the dubbed anime didn't do it any justice. So I started reading like maybe 5 or 6 chapters a day and found it much more interesting than the anime. Then once I hit the arlong park arc I was hooked and couldn't stop reading even when i was forced to have only access to dial up internet I would sit there and wait 5 minutes for each page to load just to read it. This is the series that started my manga and anime addiction, and I don't know what I will do when it ends. But, until then I will enjoy the ride that is One Piece!

its probably because the manga itself has been going for a while, hence the audience has grown up with it... that and the pure awesomeness of it. 😀

This. I started reading it in 2002 when I was barely 13. A lot of readers probably want to see this story through. It helps that the story isn't a bad one, either.

I only started reading the manga a year ago, and the anime a year before that. I'd seen the dub version of the anime b4 which put me off it really, 4kids absolutely ruined it. I'm glad i picked it up again.

Fixed. 4koma are a type of comics, 4kids is the company that is hated by pretty much everyone who has dared to see what they've done to series such as One Piece.

Speaking of 4Kids, their future looks to be really bad with their dealings with TV Tokyo & Nihon over Yu-Gi-Oh.

Yeah, I do believe the majority of readers grew up with One Piece when it first started. The story came out during a time when Japan was going through post-recession & it got to those who didn't know what to expect with regards to the future and/or were being taught to behave a certain way in society.

Not to say that most of Japan are "non-dreamers", but One Piece reminds us to follow our dreams, even in bleak times.

All shounen manga do that.

Well, I didn't grow up with one piece, and as a manga I don't feel that it is anything spectacular, it's just another shounen manga to me.
I suspect those who have grown up with it would be swayed by nostalgia.
To me, it doesn't send a message any more profound than dragon ball or pokemon.

I find it humorous that kids still are overly obsessed with ninjas as they are overly used in almost every way. On the other hand, One Piece brings out a new kind of world that no one have seen before. The refreshing sense of it allows me to enjoy it greatly. I totally understand why adults in Japan are much more into OP then teens.
