I don't think I have ever seen a real life otaku before, but I've heard of them before... bad enough that they put their health and relationships after their obsessions. Some might even try to lead a crusade for their favorite manga/anime and try to purge anyone who doesn't think like them.

Aw, hardcore fans need love too~
As long as they're not doing anything illegal, like loli-ing (or shota-ing) someone, I guess they're not that bad. Well, at least for me they're not... but it's bad for themselves. (Or maybe I'm like a real otaku that I think like that @_@)
But I agree that it's annoying (but hilarious too) when they're on a "crusade", as cheese had said.

If they're living their life the way they want it with no regrets then how exactly do you define meaningful life?
I for one had a period in my life where I was obsessed with mountain biking and was going out almost every day and spending thousands on my bike, and yet my friend was big into video games but not as much as I was into biking and yet he was the one people made fun of as being abnormal. Granted my obsession was healthy but still was an obsession. Both him and I were enjoying our lives and we didn't give a damn what other people thought.
If it gets to the point of being extremely unhealthy then it's probably a symptom of a deeper problem such as socio phobia or agoraphobia, where people have a need to fill their time with something that takes their mind off things.

Anybody heard of "The Otaku Killer"? ^^
In so Japan believe that the word otaku is a taboo due to the serial killers that are otaku. Otaku, is actually an offensive word for freaks that love animanga too much, but we the western don't look it as so >_< We actually think it is a light hearted and actually a positive word.... ... sighs
Well otaku can be expand in MANY genres, people who love lolis, shotacons, hentai, yaoi/yuri can also be identify as otaku.. and many many can actually do serious wrong things just for being otaku T_T Talk about serial killers, raping etc >_< that's just ew....
Met one? nope :/ but i met a lot of fangirls and ones that somewhat think that they themselves are real otakus when they only know Naruto xD narutard.

I've only ever run into one real otaku. Looked just like they say. But the smell. Ugh. God the smell. Maybe I don't mind if your an otaku, but for the love of god, bathe once in awhile. Just so long as you don't offend any of my senses I don;t care what you're into.
Sarcasm just doesn't work over the internet.

yeah, i got friends who are otakus
and they r hardcore anime people who cosplay and collect figures and goes to convenetions
but they are actually pretty cool people
i mean the sterotypical thing about their look is completely off
they could be very athletic, and muscular, and they could have very good eyesight
so basically unless u go into their room or they say so
it is pretty hard to tell is someone is otaku
they look like anyone u see on the street
unless u go to akiba
there is a bit of a different image there
they r pretty easily spotted, then again it is the otaku's eden after all
and about the otaku killers
lol i had a friend who caught by one in the alleyway of akiba ones
lol he got mad and beat up the guy, and ran away
haha
well just what i heard, but i guess otaku killers rnt that strong lol

It really depends on whether you're going on the Japanese meaning of "otaku" (creepily obsessed geeks) or the US meaning, which is a lot more moderate.
Anyone so obsessed with anything that they neglect things like basic hygiene really needs help. That's just WAY too focused. 🤢
Short of being that obsessed, I really have no problem with people being otaku. People who get really focused on one thing give me the uncomfortable feeling that they're quite likely obsessing over at least partly in order to escape an unhappy reality that's not going to get any better on its own (been there, done that).
I've never met a "typical otaku" but then I'm not one myself & not in a position to meet many anime/manga fans of any sort. 😔

lol i just reply while i m alive
i dont want to die for another couple decades
lol true enough
but i doubt anyone would really be obsessed to anime so much that they dont take a shower
i mean otakus in japan works in offices, they cant ussually go to work smelling like they fell in a garbage dump lol
then again it is rare in japan for a worker to be fire, unless their company go bankrupt
lol so they could just go
no one can do anything about it
Someone I know was the first thing to come to mind, looks great (damn him!) and is really outgoing, but he's also really into anime to the point of lots of figures, posters, a LOT of his time, etc.
Like tofu said, it depends on which meaning you are going by. I get the impression you mean a mix of the two, someone who is dangerously obsessed with something, but in relation to anime/manga. In this case I'd think they'd need to change their lifestyle a bit (as it's dangerous by the definiton i just suggested).
Though I have nothing against anyone having a strong obsession if it doesn't negitively (greatly) effect their behaviour and treatment of others.
:3
Why must we talk about otaku? 😔

If you'd like, we can all go to the chatter box and talk about J K Rowling, or spam introduction threads.
Anyhow, NHK ni Youkoso! comes to mind.
