ESRB

I never look at ESRB rating, they overreact on judging a lot of games IMHO , like shin megami tensei III they gave it a M rating, I didnt see anything that deserved that rating but I would give it a Teen rating going too far, considering cultural differences with japan, but i still think they went way too far with that M 😃

Basically, I do look at the ratings. My parents really don't care what I play, I think. I've never shown much interest in M rated games, because I prefer to have corpses out of my way, which is what happens in T rated games. My parents probably just don't want my 10 year old brother interested in M rated games, which is reasonable enough I guess.
Personally, I think Super Smash Brothers should be rated E instead of T though. Like, it's really not that bad at all. The only reason I think it was rated T was because teens tend to like it more than younger kids, and they want teens to buy it.

They rate it high enough so that they would be sued illegally.
I mean super smash bros goes E, a mom would sue ESRB/Nintendo if her son hit someone and than goes to blame ESRB about how their ratings are E for everyone and should be rated T for teen so she could get some cash for her "loss".
Its all about suing and whose getting sued.

I just look out of curiosity. I don't let it affect which game I'm going to want to play or not, but I tend to play a LOT of M rated games (ie. Manhunt 1 and 2, God of War 2, etc.). A game I think should have gotten a different rating was Manhunt 2. I wish they had gone with the AO rated version. They trimmed it down and it ended up bein LESS violent and creepy than the first one. I just think that would have been pretty cool. 😛

well in kuwait you can see 8 year olds playing 18+ games and nobody cares about it much, cause games are just that Games ^^

to me, parents should caution based on each individual child. Like, if a child is mature enough, then why not let them play higher rated games?
With regard to manhunt 2, games in the same series tend to all get the same rating as the first one, maybe to keep the audience the same, etc. Like, all Final Fantasies are T no matter what, all the halos are M, even though my friends who've played through it say that Halo 3 isn't "bad" at all.

I totally agree. After playing many online M rated games it has shown me how much maturity affects the kids playing. There are many 12 year old who kill everything in site and spam the mic which totally pisses me off >:-( . And then their are those kids who act mature, play with everyone else and you can have good conversations with.

I used to take note of game ratings so that I could see which games I would have to drag my mom into the store in order to purchase. The clerks in my town are stiffs when it comes to the ratings. I'm 17 now though, so the ESRB can shove it.

My general rule of thumb is that if a game is rated AO then I don't want to play it. Aside from getting shafted by the ESRB because some dumb kid hacked your game disc, the only games with an AO rating exist purely on their violent/sexual content and not on gameplay. I don't care what game you are, you should be able to manage to keep it below AO.

Basically, I've never seen any out in the open in non-very-sketchy US stores. But do you really need to see that stuff? Wouldn't you feel like a serial killer or rapist afterwards?

Nah. If Manhunt 2 kept its AO rating, I bet a lot more people would start buying AO games just to play it.
