i basically noticed a lot of people say that they have made friends online, now i know people have been meeting up for years now, and all but usually thats if its a guy talking to a girl or a girl talking to a guy and they are interested and want to take things to the next level by meeting up in person.

but from what i read a lot of people make friends online, just plain old ordinary friends that actually become pretty close in their life.

so I'm interested in knowing "how you did it?", step by steps and "what sites" have you used?
there are billions of people online, what made you decide to pick that random person to chat with and decide you want them to be your friend.

ps: i know there is already a thread that asks, have you ever met someone online, so i want to make it clear that i am asking for something totally different, i'm asking how did you go about connecting with the friend online and arranging a visit.

Well, i send letters (yea snail mail, cuz we're cool like that) to a girl im pretty close with that i met online.She suggested having me fly over and visit her, but, im paranoid XD so maybe one day i will, but for now i prefer keeping "Online" friends ONLINE. i met her just trolling around a site called experience Project. :]

Lol. I met a friend like... over 5 years ago? On an online game called Maplestory.
I think I met her sibling first... asking for something on the game...
the rest is a big blur to me.
We're still good friends now.

Nope, haven't met anyone. But it is only a matter of time, Miisa.

Steps:
1.)Type your city
2.)Type a hobby
3.)Type the word "community" or "forums".

There's always a local meet up sooner or later. It happened with my local PC Enthusiast/Gamer community. It happened with my local Toy Collectors community. Same with the local Anime/Manga/Cosplay community. And that's where it starts. Though some were made because they had an interesting persona online.

Hell, probably more than half of my current friends were made online.

We are a community of AS Roma fans

3. how did you guys connect and decide to arrange a visit?

We meet to talk about football, life, watch AS Roma games and drink. We arrange our meeting using messengers, we meet at pubs we like and the number of participants vary from 7 to 20~ .

Though if you mean dating sites, I did make a dating profile for my cat, and even got a few positive replies.

2. Why did you choose to chat with this person?
   Why not? They're people who have the same interests as me.

   Connect? Hm... well... It's basically what I said for number two. I actually have not met anyone yet, but they are people I do plan to meet some day, hopefully.

Bunch of furries.

Anyway yeah there is about 1 million dating sites all do the same thing more or less. I did once have a girl I really liked online but to be honest we had no money to see each other in person so it did not last.

As I learnt from on of Joseph Kosuths conceptual art pieces (One and Three Chairs) , nothing is like the real thing.
