I'm a fan of this manga and it's pretty hilarious, but critically speaking, the people in this manga are so extremely lacking of common sense that sometimes it makes my head hurt lmao.

Well, since it exists, and since it's existence is known to many people, some must hate it.
Tastes largely differ after all (I am thankfull for that, there are some incredibly popular mainstream maga which make me think "better dead than liking them!!!")
Also, since prejudice is depicted as a clearly negative trait, it is bound to piss of some people who think otherwise.

The cover doesn't encourage me to read it, and people seem to say the artwork in the first volumes is pretty bad. Also, the story is really long. Nothing really screams 'Read me!' Plus, it is about some ugly guy. Oh, well, better than having a hideous chick; I just might give it a chance some day.

Well the chicks in this comics surely all are far from hideous...
Anyway, your post dodges the question, as not caring about something and hating something are completely different things alltogether. Usually haters tend to know the object of their hate better then it's fans and followers, which certainly doesn't seem to be the case in your case, since you don't even hate the art yourself, rather than somewhat relying on the opinion of somone else (Which is completely okay, people who think we absolutely have to have a strong opinion to every single damn thing are ... wrong imho).

It really is just like the theme on the manga.
Are we going to be friends with Kitano Seichirou cs (the manga),
OR
are we just gonna be most of the people who only see the looks/face (the art) then just running & screaming (not read the manga) because afraid/hate/dislike the looks/face (the art/the manga)

Plenty of people I know who hate everything they don't like...

Lots of folks probably don't like this manga. I read on another forum that it is thought to be repetitive, so it gets old after a while. Plus the art may throw people off.

I however am not one of those people. I do agree that it got repetitive, but it is a gag manga after all, and I found myself laughing even till the end. The ending is nice too and I think finishes the series off well.
