It's not an issue of children not understanding the mechanics of sex (though I will certainly agree that it's often not properly explained), but rather that they're not mature enough to REALLY understand and be responsible for the full ramifications of having sex with someone.

For many people there is an emotional element involved in sex, it's not just a purely physical act...even if they originally approach it as such. There is also the risk of pregnancy and/or disease, and children and young teens (and some older teens as well) are rather notoriously liable to fall into magical thinking - "those bad things could never happen to ME".

Emotional & mental maturity are very individual, of course, and very difficult to assess. That's why there's a legal age - to set some kind of rule for "below this age, the majority of people are NOT old enough to make & be responsible for their own decisions; above this age, the majority of people are." It's surely not a perfect system, but I would argue in favor of protection for the young even at the (temporary) expense of a bit of freedom. 😐

I didn't bring up marriage so I don't know why you did. And besides, the laws have changed in many places, so its not just between a man and a woman. Something that as a bisexual, I'm proud of, but that's not the issue here.

What I brought up was love, which is what you brought up "Love no matter its form should not be opposed". This is the issue I'm challenging with the whole bestiality issue. Because yes, there are weirdoes out there, granted not many, who will say that they've fallen in love with an animal and therefore the sex they have is valid, and should not be opposed. There's also issues of incest. I don't think that all love is valid.

I do think there are good reasons for statutory rape laws to exist. If you want to argue that the ages should be lowered because a 16 year old or 14 year old is able to fall in love, that's fine. But for me there is a difference between arguing what age limits for statutory rape should be, and saying that we should would allow all pedophilia, no matter the age, as long as there's love.

And no, I don't think that a 6 year old or 10 year old is fully capable of understanding sex, whether it be the physical or emotional aspects. And someone of these ages definitely should not be engaging in sex. An adult who does have sex with someone this age is a predator, not a lover.

Actually, there is. My sister got her period at age 9, and she had friends who got theirs earlier. Especially if the male partner is older, there absolutely is a risk of pregnancy...and most definitely a risk of disease as well.

This discussion (at least my part it in) is about REAL CHILDREN, not drawings, so doujins don't really enter into it (unless they're drawn from live underage models).

Before you start talking about such topics, you need to consider the society and culture of the country you're talking about.

Are we really talking about the situation of child porn in the country where middle school girls sell themselves and their female friends for some quick cash and fun? Really?

Sorry, I can't imagine a country or place where I would say pedophilia is okay. I think there are times when you should respect the cultural differences, and there are times when you shouldn't. When it comes to abusive situations like pedophilia and child abuse, I'm not okay with that in any society. I don't care if that makes me xenophobic or intolerant.

Laws are just laws. I don't think they'll have any kind of an effect really,
especially in corrupt places like Japan. It's a cultural thing and the only way to
get rid of questionable things that can be turned into cash is awareness and time
that weaken the foundation.

This topic has always been about real child pornography, so I don't really get the last post. Some posters have mentioned that they were okay with 2d child porn, shota and loli, but not okay with the law concerning real children.
