Art vs. Plot

Gonna have to disagree with many posters now.
Plot is more important, I agree.
But for me, art is just as much as important. Why? Art is the thing that hooks me. It keeps me reading. Without good art (how I view good, of course), I won't be too keen to read the manga anymore. For example, take Kimi wa Pet. I've heard really great reviews about it, and I'm pretty sure it's a decent manga...but I couldn't get past the first chapter. Generally because of the art. After reading almost half of the first chapter, I really couldn't stand it anymore so I just dropped it. The art was too messy and not my taste. DX
I mean, it really depends. If the art is beautiful, but the plot is flat-out horrible, I would stop reading (example: Kyo, Koi wa Hajimemasu).
It's not that I view plot less important that art; it's just that for me to read manga, art is one of the top reasons I continue it.
If plot is more important than art in reading mangas, then I'd rather go read a book, thank you very much.

to be frank, i read most shoujo for the bishies. The better the art the hotter the bishies. But i often get hooked with the plot. So i chose which i read by the art (and sometimes by the mangaka) and continue to read because of the plot. But for shoujo manga with bad art like giantic overpronunced mouths and strange looking hair coughShimaki Akocough i have to force myself to read it till the end

i second to that. art first then plot. however good the plot is, i can't read it if the art's so bad.

For me the art is very important, though I see myself as open-minded towards experimenting artwork - but I don't like if it gets too silly (like reeeally crazy proportions).
On the other hand, I also start reading mangas because of good reviews and plot. So it's a mix, I guess... So, if the artwork is really good, I can bear with a bad plot, and if the plot is AWESOME I can bear with lousy artwork. 😃

Haha, I actually kind of like her art, but the plot can be kind if weak in her stories.

Plot. I judge whether to read a manga or not at first glance by art, but the only thing that can keep me reading or drag me into reading something is the plot. And at this point, after reading so many shoujo, I'm starting to feel like I could care less about the art. I just want something good.

Art for me. If I cannot stand the art, I'll drop the manga no matter how freaking good the plot is. It just hurts my eye too much. If the art is beautiful and the plot is terrible, I'll read it to the end, but, I'll give it a terrible score. 😐

I can disregard some not so pretty (to my eyes, at least) art if the plot is intense, fast-moving, and not character-based. None of which is usually applicable to shoujo. XD
So in this thread I vote for both at the same time.
Pretty art + boring plot = I'll only read it if there are some characters who truly fascinate me. But if by the end of the first chapter (or second if I'm feeling generous and it looks really good) no one caught my attention, I drop it.
Interesting plot + bad art = if there is a mystery, I'll be prompted to simply read the last chapter, otherwise I might give it a try but I'll most likely drop it soon anyway.

I tend to look at plot first, but character design is slightly more important for me. Art as a whole is not a big deal for me so much as the chars themselves.
Often I will look at a cover or pic and if I don't like the char design I wont bother pursuing it unless the plot sounded really good. Whereas I will read something where I liked the char design even if I thought the plot was bad. That doesn't mean I will always finish it- A terrible plot can be a real pain to trudge thru and can at times completely override excellent char design.
Long story shot:
Char design- 65%
Plot: 35%

To be honest, plot is more important to me than art. If the plot is engrossing I'll continue reading even if I don't like the artwork. However, if the art is fantastic but the plot is absolute crap, I'll probably just skim through for the art and be done with it. That's just my opinion, but I study literature so analyzing plot is one of the main things I critique when reading, that and character development...

Plot matters. But the character designs should be suited with the story too.

Plot.
I can't read too many chapters of bull shit.
Ex:
Natsume Yuujinchou doesn't have that great of an art but the story is amazing.

Art is usually what attracts me to the manga and what keeps me from later dropping it is the plot... If the story only has bishies and no point I end up treating it as a picture book just flipping through to enjoy the art.
A good unique and creative plot is essential to creating an interesting manga that has me hooked. Which is getting harder and harder to find.
Art is the matter to me..manga without nice art just cut my mood to finish read it..Plot i dont mind so much as long as the art is really pleased me...

OFC PLOT...
art is a matter... but i found so many manga with a great art but wrap with a stupid story and plot... and i definitely not like it... without story and plot, art is nothing... it's just a bunch of scratch from a pencil... lolz 😀
what makes ur heart pounding when seeing a kiss/erotic scene is the word right... not just art...
rofl XD
if it's only art it'll be no different with reading a raw scan... (picture full of word which i don't understand) hahaha XD
