Heroic but Stupid Characters(Methods)

Any characters who perform heroic sacrifices even though it is completely stupid or insane? Worst case scenario; they already did it?
But when they do that, they are forever remembered, and are praised and criticized by their admirers and their oppressors. The only character I know is the 4th Hokage from Naruto even though there's not much backstory on this character. Personally, I believe self sacrifice is stupid, but I do believe its necessary for progression of the story.
So, anything that rings a bell? Cause I'm making a prequel story for one of my own and I really need some reference.

why is his self sacrifice stupid? if he didn't die, then possibly the whole village might have gotten raped. it's reasonable if you ask me, sacrificing 1 life to save a couple hundred more.
