Description
When the Wischtech threatened to invade the fiefs of Szaalanden, the Emperor dispatched fourteen youths. Of these, the Seven Heroes halted the invasion to herald a time of prosperity while the four Lances of Betrayal were supposedly defeated.

Two decades later, the Lances of Betrayal have reappeared and formed a bandit militia near the frontier fief Gormbark. A man with a black sword and a scar over his left eye slays an entire troop of that militia. He is identified as the boy, Koinzell, and becomes as much an object of fear as of hope even as his own past, motivations, and purpose are a mystery to those he meets on his journey.

Volume 0 encompasses a plot arc which leads directly into the main plot of Übel Blatt in Volume 1. It also introduces and develops the attitudes and motives of a few other characters aside from Koinzell.

This manga start out great and a page turner. Such a shame really that there was several element that take me away from this manga.

random sex scene (very annoying) would be better without this and the volume 0 works reverse to put people off than make people read it due to that.

it was good at first after the sex scene decrease and it became more serious, but more problem. It's too fast paced, like how it just time skip the whole war not telling us how it progressed slowly. I often have problem digesting what's going on and was disappointed

I couldn't believe I loved this manga before despite the sex scene, but now..i just pick this up when I am out of manga to read.

This manga started of OK, got good after a few volumes than got boring and tame around volume 8 or so. Than it went on a hiatus, came back and now it is just again just OK.
The the art is pretty good but the "world building" is sub par. So after 12 Volumes i had enough.
By the way. How many mangas is he writing at once ? Does he want to one up LIM Dall-Young ?
Instead i suggest Berserk, Wolfsmund, Vinland Saga and so on.

The plan is pretty cool; personal revenge turn out to be a group quest, which along the way take up valuable lessons and friends. However, its execution is nothing to speak of. I trace some intention of putting main characters in cool position in the middle of urgent situation. For example, giving command calmly from a bathub while intercepting an attacking army. Or walking slowly with contentment of own accomplishment while riot is still underway. I have to go here to check up if this manga intended for teenage reader or this is author first piece because, well, they're ridiculous. Add non-protective armour, skimpy clothing, useless knights, irrelevant sex scene; if this piece were to made a movie, it wouldn't even made a decent B-rate.

Turns out, this manga is for mature audience. I don't know which mature audience, but I refuse to be entertained by piece that are put together haphazardly. I guess that's okay if we read it when we're in 'the hell of it, I just want to read some story' mood, because indeed this is a page turner. But believe me, after all pages are turned, you won't say 'what an inspiring story,' but closer to 'son, I'm disappointed.'

Good art, interesting character design, but crowded with useless character and lame placement.

Despite what some the reviews below say, I really enjoy reading this manga. The plot is set up very well, the characters are likable, and artwork is top-notch. I don't think that it's got anything above Berserk quality; but then again Berserk is really just incomparable seeing as it has a fan base that streches back 30 somepin' years ago. On it's own, It's a great manga that has definitely got into my top 10.

This manga has all the right elements, but those elements, action, drama, friendship, betrayal, fear, courage, consistency. . .etc., are not done very well. It's just a case of a good story told badly. No matter how good the song, joke, story, whatever, it needs to be sung/told well. Otherwise it fails. This story teller failed.

I think I read up to about chapter 83, and I can honestly say that I remember almost nothing about this manga except that the MC has pointy ears and red swords that come out of his back.

Make no mistake this is a great read, but the story slowly but surely becomes complicated and complex with political maneuvering, betrayals, rogue military units, a fracturing military empire and a 500 ton elephant in the room that the story has yet to address. Thats not necessarily a bad thing, but it can be disjointing when you consider the fact that the story starts off as a mere badass-returned-from-the-grave, revenge story.

In short, this is a Berserk knockoff with more focus on larger scaled battles and political dealing/backstabbing.

It simply has some of the best artwork around the story is all right but people tell me berserk is way better . I have seen some samples of berserk and the art of Blatt is definitely better so I think it has to do with the story ,but this is decent stuff and has great artists working on it.

Its like hunter by hunter with medieval revenge in it, the sex is almost inexistent like all claim. There are more sex in romantic comedies. The history so far is boring like The vision of escaflowne, but the draws are well done and the character are kinda nice but ofc the uncoherent things is part of this shonen mangas. The reason is popular in my guest is becasue the gore and the obvious things that attract people like in this typical mangas.
Mayou Maou Yusha is a lot better read than this but ofc that one is only popular with middle age persons that dont need a rain of blood to be entertainment. But the political background is decent.

In overall I give a 5 to this manga, Its a good manga and good read but nothing new and too focus in shonen seinen typical manga.

Incredibly out of character sex scenes

When i first started reading this i was completely taken off guard when the main character who looks extremely young started fingering an older woman. This series does start off with a few very out of character sex scenes that do not fit in the story at all and don't really have a set up, its just some older woman who shoes up and says, "oh! hello little boy, for some reason i find children attractive, and if i were a man and this wasn't manga i would be in jail for child molestation". Its like pedo bear shows up wearing a skirt and it does't phase Koinzell at all. I understand that he is a warrior back from the dead after 20 years but that doesn't change the fact that he has the body of a 12 year old.
I kept reading in hopes that the sex scenes would disappear as the story matured and focused more on the plot.

Thank goodness i kept reading because the sex scenes that should be left only to doujinshi for the people who like that sort of thing do eventually become nearly nonexistent.

Don't get me wrong i don't dislike Ubel Blatt because overall this manga really is worth reading, the beginning of the series may have a few graphic sex scenes that don't fit but once you get past them the series does take off on an epic adventure. The story is really good, some might say its cliche but that isn't a bad thing. And when i say that there are out of place sex scenes its pretty much like someone hid a few pages of playboy in Naruto so that their mom wouldn't find it.

I have to give this series an 8/10 because the few sex scenes in the beginning really do devalue the story. if not for that i'd give it a higher score depending on how it ends when and if the series comes out of hiatus.

This one starts out very ecchi, with a lot of nudity that seems to be just for the sheer sake of having naked girls scampering about the pages. If you can trudge through this, the writing does improve greatly as the rampant nudity gets turned down to almost nonexistence. Koinzell still remains a blatantly overpowered character that can take out almost anyone with little to no difficulty. However just when things start to get interesting as he's finally facing an opponent that has more than a decent shot of taking him out, the manga goes into hiatus on a cliffhanger.

It has been in hiatus now since 2009. While the mangaka apparently does intend to pick it up again, I think our hopes of seeing that happen are going to diminish with each passing year. If you're reading this and having started reading Übel Blatt yet, don't do it. Maybe download the manga and just sit on it while you read other things.
