abt the ending (spoiler warning)
Wow, just wow. That is a more through analysis of the the characters and their motivations than I ever hoped to see. I can't say that I disagree with much of anything in it. That's one hell of a first post as well, now go throw an intro thread up and stick around to discuss other stuff, I feel your input on other series would be very valuable. And once again, wow.
standing ovation D:
You have seen the light. 😀 But I really agree with everything you said. Nishino was the most compatible with Manaka.

Wow... there's a lot written about the ending. I actually read the manga twice over once I got to the ending, primarily because I'm an emotional nerd.
Be that as it may, I will now prepare to offer my defence of the reasons why the current ending is, in fact, the best ending. First, a look into some character profiles:
Being that this ending has given me the most emotional impact than any other ending in recent memory (manga or any other type of media), I was of course obligated to read this lengthy post. I agree with a lot of what you said. Nishino was my favorite girl throughout most of the manga. For most of the time, I found myself rooting for Nishino. However, I don't really think that Nishino was the "right" choice, nor do I think she was the best choice. I think either Nishino or Toujo would have been excellent choices for him. I could see each of them living happy lives if instead of choosing Nishino, he chose Toujo. The roles would have pretty much been reversed, and instead it would have been Nishino who would have to move on. But that's just speculation at this point.
So, I really wasn't disappointed that Manaka chose her in the end. It was more like I was shocked that he didn't choose Toujo. That shock eventually led to slight depression when they said their final "goodbye" at Manaka's exam (the one where Toujo pretty much says that she's moving on). It was really sad, especially when Toujo walks away and Manaka thinks to himself, "Turn around one more time, Toujo... No, don't turn around. Don't turn around, Toujo" and Toujo walks away, with both of them crying. Then Manaka reminisces about their first meeting, and says that he felt that anything was possible with Toujo by his side, and that she was the only girl that made him feel that way. It was particularly sad since he realized that if any of them would have expressed their feelings, they would have been together, but it was far too late by then. Toujo could no longer be with the person she truly loved and the one that made her into the person that she is now, and Manaka could no longer be with the person that he liked the most (for most of the manga) and the one that made him feel, in a way, invincible, all because their personalities prevented it from working out. Truly tragic.
Of course, time went by, and they matured, and they are more than happy with the lives they chose. It may not have turned out exactly as they had wanted, but it is still more than enough to satisfy them. Maybe I would have preferred not to have been left so depressed after reading it, but it was still a great ending. Funny, the tears I was longing for when I finished reading decided to show up now while I was writing this post.

I liked Tsukasa from the start and very happy that it ended this way. Main hero could be better, but what is the point to complain, he was a main hero after all 🙂

it was suprising, i always expected that toujo and manaka would get together
not really dissapointing because all of them had their good points and had a shot at being with manaka
i expected it to be more happily ever after though

Dude Manaka doesnt deserve to be jacked and "cool" looking at the end. I also prefered Nishino over Toujo, don't like the weak defenseless type way too much.
Whew, I finally finished this. Felt like I should say something after accomplishing such a feat. Almost feels like saying goodbye to an old friend. Though it was near unbearably frustrating at times and I dropped it for months at time, I still liked it for the most part.
I don't have a problem with the way it ended, even though Tsukasa wasn't my personal favorite. That would be Satsuki, but she never really had a chance and I knew it. Misuzu was actually my second favorite, but she wasn't in contention (I'm glad she got a nice long omake dedicated to her in the end though).
I guess by the end I liked Tsukasa better than Aya, though. Early on I preferred Aya, but she just never really got it together and the whole shy girl thing got old after a while. Tsukasa was also probably a better match for Manaka, since I don't think two weak personalities like Manaka and Aya would work out.

Personally I wanted Satsuki to win but I knew she wouldn't.
I actually liked the ending. The story really has you guessing since that idiot would also run away to another girl everytime things started to get serious with one. It was surprising that Toujou lost out. After Manaka makes his decision, I think the manga does a good job of dealing with everyone so that no matter who you wanted him to end up with, you felt satisfied or at least you didn't feel sorry for the character.

Sorry I don't agree with you on that one, as a Satsuki fan (just like myself) how can you not feel that the ending for Satsuki was incomplete. I would have been far more satisfied if Satsuki had also moved on and not retained hope after 4 years that she still might get Manaka. I felt that in terms of loving someone Satsuki might be the one that was most in love with manaka out of the 3 and it would have been nice to see her with a new love even if she still held some affection for manaka. Sorta like she introduces her new love at the get together but when she sees manaka she still blushes, something along those lines would have clearly shown that she has moved on while at the same time she hasn't betrayed the feelings that she had for her first love.

Couldn't you also use the same argument for Toujo, though? In my eyes, she loved Manaka more than the other two girls. She also didn't find a new love at the point of their reunion. When they finally met after five years, you could tell that she still held some sort of affection, and since she hasn't found someone else you could still say that the affection was love. Now, Manaka and Toujo did say their final goodbye (in terms of any possible romantic relationship), but who's to say that Toujo really did move on. She pursued her dream to become a writer, and became successful, but that doesn't mean that she still isn't harboring feelings for him.
Satsuki didn't really have any big goals in life, which is why she ended up working that family restaurant. However, if you look at it in terms of accomplishing what they set out to do and not the size of the accomplishment, then you could say that both Toujo and Satsuki are at the same level. They both accepted the fact that Manaka chose Nishino, and chose to pursue something. They each succeeded in the thing they pursued, but neither one of them has found someone else. For all we know, both of them could have been subconsciously (or consciously) hoping that Manaka would have met them and fallen for them. If you look at it like that, then neither Toujo nor Satsuki got the proper ending.

this manga messed me up emotionally, can't help but feel depressed. i wasn't satisfied with the ending, but its very fitting and I couldn't see another way on how it would end since Aya confessed at the very last minute... i can only dream for an alternate ending
