Yeah, like I have enough money for buying 500+ manga 10$ each laugh roll eyes

I download it. I feel sad, and guilty for many other things/people. But not for downloading manga online. Not for downloading anything actually.

It gives those authors more exposure, and I know that many people buy the originals of the manga they like.
So we all benifit from this. biggrin

I approach downloading of any media in the same way: I 1. Don't have the money to purchase the items I can find for free online, and 2. use downloading as a sampling process for possible purchases.

My downloading and buying is based on love. If I love the manga I buy it, if the licensed version doesn't totally blow. And sometimes I buy manga so I can read it sometimes companies go faster than scanslation groups or they publish stuff that no one scans.

Option number two for me, although as my Japanese improves, I'm starting to import copies of my various favorite series.

However, I think that saying you feel as though you can download a series just because you can't afford to buy a licensed copy is ridiculous. If there are clothes that I want and I can't afford them, I don't steal them from the store--I just do without. Now, I understand that it's not a perfect analogy, but being poor or not having a job doesn't give you the right to, in essence, steal things. If you can't afford it, then either get a job, get it from the library, borrow it from a friend, or simply do without them.

That's not to say that I'm completely against reading the first few chapters online to see if I want to buy something. In my opinion, it's far better than going to the bookstore and flipping through a book that someone else will buy later. Who knows--I could somehow rip a page or make the book less than "new" in some way. But if it's good enough that I want to read it, I will buy it. If it sucks, then I just sell them at the used bookstore.

Then again, I also don't download music or movies that I haven't paid for. I'm a pretty moral-bound person.

I am in the same situation as my Argentinian bud.

If I had the money, and LOVED a series, I would probably buy it, but never before the series is complete and I can manage to get an absurd deal on 25 volumes for $2 or $3 dollars each

Why?

Don't want another Naruto pulled on me, I mean I Loved it at the start, but after the chunnin exams it just went down, I am grateful, all I had to do was to DELETE that thing off my comp and not just cry in a corner for wasted money.

Second, even when I am buying, I protect my money IE find the best deal possible, is a family thing, and a motto for me laugh

Yeah, I know downloading manga (especially licensed manga) is morally incorrect, but I don't really care. Why pay for something you can get free? I guess I have loose morals.

I know this is a rhetorical question, but I feel like answering it anyway from a logical (not ethical) standpoint. The answer is "so it will continue to be produced". While it's not like the manga industry is going to collapse because you don't buy anything, it's the paying customers that ultimately determine what succeeds in any entertainment medium. Just look at the outrage the readership of Double Arts and Mx0 experienced when they were canceled because the Japanese readership didn't rate them very highly. It's basically the same thing.

I'm not pointing fingers or anything here, just talking flat out business.

I can relate to what you say, what happened to MxO and double arts is pitiful, we should all send hate mail to shounen jump (that was the magazine right? don't want to get it wrong) maybe that way they stop to cut good series... biggrin

WOW, what a question! It definitely got me where it hurts xD

It's a complex feeling. I mean, who doesn't like getting stuff for free? I usually think that way (can't help being asian, you know), but after the recent axing of series due to it not making enough money...it kinda made me think it over. For now, I shall keep on downloading, but when I get a job, have a considerable income, I shall buy everything that I've downloaded (to the limit of my searching abilities that is)

I'm sorry, but I can't help but feel that you totally missed my point >_>. If you like something and want it to be around, the best way to ensure that is to actually purchase it, since that sends a message to the publishing corporation, which is essentially only concerned with making money. Hate mail will do nothing but make people angry.

Quote from Manick
I think the problem is that when you're young, you don't have any money. As you get older, and get a job, you have the money to buy and expand your manga collection. In my opinion, there is just about no substitute for having an actual tangible book in your hand. The quality of the paper, the quality of the ink, everything is just so much better (translations aside). I found my ideals change a bit as I got older. When I got to the point where I could afford things, I actually started buying them. I have a lot more satisfaction from owning the actual items than I would if I had downloaded them from the internet.

Now I realize that a lot of manga isn't licensed, and there really is no way to read them otherwise, but for licensed manga, there are other things you can do. One is that you could go to a Borders or Barnes&Nobles and read the manga there. I frequently see others reading manga when I go in to get something. The other option is to use a library.

When you get to the point where you find yourself reading something twice, or where you really enjoyed a series, you should go out and buy it. When something really truly touches you on that level, then you need to go out and support the industry, regardless of whether you read their version or just place it on a shelf. It's a symbol to yourself that you really enjoyed that story, and that it was worth money.

In the end, downloading is bad. There's just no way to stop it though ... especially in a niche focused at a younger audience.

maybe manga/anime isn't worth keeping? It's something you read and throw away like a paper towel or something.......books i can understand. But manga/anime.....not a lot of worth.

That's a horrible statement. Throw away like a paper towel? Holy crap that's a terrible thing to say. I can't see why you would just throw away manga after you read it. That's such a waste.
