It sorta bothers me when they're called comics, but I know the people are ignorant and they really are trying their best. But when they start calling it mango, then they've crossed the line into being annoying.

They are Comics. (And anime is cartoons) Similarly people who use terms like Graphic Novel are just in denial that they like the medium. I admit that the Japanese tend toward very different plots but I stand by my words

I don't call them comics because they're not comics. But I have to say they are the same, or at least under the same concept. It's just a matter of terms. They AREN'T comics, but they're the SAME as comics. It's the same thing as how you shouldn't call manhwa - manga or manga - comic or comic - manhua. But they're all graphic novels.

People get too uptight about these kinds of things. Who cares if you call it comics or manga or graphic novels- they're all still the same thing! To tell you the truth, even I sometimes refer to them as Japanese comics. It makes me sound a little less geeky.

It bothers me a little, but I don't get upset over it.

And once again, anime is not cartoons, it is animation. There is a difference between cartoons and animation. Cartoons are just a type of animation.

As he said, comics and manga are not the same; and kaloo, it'd be wise of you to first learn the meaning behind the words you choose to stand by, rather than blindly follow them.

Comics are, as most people here don't seem to know, images used to tell a sequential narrative; and are based on what? Comedy, thus the name comics.

Manga is not so; it is indeed similar at first view, but manga potrays much more character development, as well as attempting to get in touch with the readers themselves. Might I add they are not always comdey based; thus they are not comics.

That's the lesson for today. =)

And isn't the literal translation of manga something like "whimsical pictures"? So when someone in Japan uses images to tell a sequential narrative that is not whimsical in nature, what do you call them?

The word's origin certainly comes from "comical" as in humorous since that's all comics were originally, but would you bat an eye if someone said "Spiderman comics"? Spiderman isn't about humor but it's still a comic.

I dislike the term "graphic novel" personally and I use "comic" to generically refer to anything that uses sequential pictures and words to tell a story or a joke, including manga.

I read some of the original spiderman comics; and what your saying is not true. Sure it has action, and superhero antics. Yet it does have a lot of comedy in it; for the more adult tastes. ie: The newspaper bit is meant to be funny "Get me pictures of spiderman!" or the whole "POW, BAM, WHACK!" ect, is all meant to be funny; thus why it can be called a comic. Using the word comic to describe manga which is compltely different while being aware of the fact is just being stubborn. Do you think a novel and a book are the same? They aren't for your information, even if they have the same basics; there are huge differences. FYI, if you can't see them, just give up on this topic; because your behind.

@Mo-Dean: First off, those are manga; just because manga originated in Japan doesn't mean it has to be drawn there, are you serious? Secondly, name a sequential narrative that has absolutely no comedic sense in it,and looks like what manga is; drawn with details, deep character connections, and something that gives the reader a "That happened to me." kind of feeling. You won't find one.

As for the "whimsical pictures", once again; name me something of the sort. All manga is whimsical in nature; there is no such thing as one that isn't. To those narratives that aren't manga, you will ALWAYS find a name for them. ie: Picture books, visual novels, ect.

Comics originated in Japan are manga. Comics of the same kind but originated in other countries are manga-influenced comics. I get goosebumps every time when I read about 'European mangaka'. Those are comic artists just as much as Kaori Yuki or Kubo Tite are, just in their cases it's the native language term.

You don't call an American comic artist 'dessinateur' either just because the style is influenced by french comics and you usually don't refrer to french comics as 'bande dessinée' when you're not actually talking in french. So I don't really see the whole hype about manga as a term. It's merely sounding fancy, so people demand it.

Also not quite right; because your simply looking at it from our point of view. Going by what your saying, we could just say that manga originated in the US are comics and manga of the same kind in other countries are comic-influenced manga. If you go by simple terms, that is how it plays out; which is utter nonesense.

It's as if you guys simply wish to ignore the differences in art and depth between manga and comics; not to mention origin, thus being satisfied by simply calling it a comic when that is not its name.

Not to mention if you want to start the whole "cultural difference" discussion, in america people refer to manga-like comics as Amerimanga; not comics. So for those that wish to be so right on terms, and "stand by their words" that's what you need to start calling it; or just hush.

I honestly can't believe what I'm reading.
