From what I've seen of British and American humor, most of the time Americans tend to lean toward vulgarity, shock value, and insults as the staple of their jokes, while British humor is more about randomness and a play on irony.

The "...what?" reaction is what's suppose to get you laughing, but sometimes "what?" is all that it invokes.
