like i hear mangakas change their stories based on strolling around fan based threads and forums... and they might adjust it to be more appealing towards the audience....

Spoiler (highlight to view)
i say this, cause in case of naruto,,, i have to say that tobi was meant to be obito... considering that right eye having a hole to signify he has one eye or one using eye....... and the way his name is reversed and all.... i mean i find it really surprising when it turned out to be madara..... maybe it was planned, but i was hoping tobi to be obito,,,, but pretty much everyone was guessing he really was obito,,,, or maybe its madara possessing obito's body.......... and bleach as well,, i was surprised to see ichigo's father being a shinigami,, which the only excuse he had was "i never called kon in ichigo's body by his name while he was there"...

but maybe im making far fetched

If the Manga-ka's name is Kubo, then yes, definitely. I think he's even said himself he trolls forums to see what people are saying. As for others who can say, I'm sure Kishi has had to make changes due to demands made by the people above him at SJ, so who can say why some of these things happen.

I've heard about some harem mangakas deciding who the protagonist ends up with based on poll results on the publisher's website. It's not uncommon, I am sure.

It depends on the publication and the author.

I think you'll find that the smaller scale authors are typically more inclined to work with their original intentions due to the size of the fanbase- after all, it wouldn't make sense for some obscure author to lurk around much when they aren't being discussed, now would it? More popular/longer running authors are probably more likely to check to see what their fans are thinking in order to maintain their popularity.

Then again, 99% of mangaka do not speak english. So I'm speaking purely in terms of the Japanese fanbase.

Besides, the opinions of those who read scanlations don't matter- they aren't a paying part of the fanbase anyway.

^ haha, you make a lot of sense. XDD

But I think the mangakas have a set deadline and the amount of books they're allowed to publish, so they have a limit as to what they can do..
They can't change the story too much, you know what I mean? They're still working for a company, after all.

I know it was said in one of the Tanemura Arina's free talks in Shinshi Doumei Cross that she was writing the story "off-the-cuff" (without any planned start or end) and that she hadn't planned for it to be slightly shounen-ai, but it did get worked into the story based on feedback saying "Aw, please do it." - so she did. =) However, she usually works from a planned script.

I've read that Fujiwara Hiro, who did Kaichou wa Maid-sama!, changed the storyline based on what her fans want. It was originally supposed to be about Misaki being Usui's personal maid or something.

i doubt it for english forums... theres just too fast paced...
but it would crazy if the american reader's opinions really reached japan, then i think anime and manga would evolve faster, due to the stories being adjusted more diversely culturally....

but i highly doubt it though, lol....
considering japan hates america right now for massive anime/manga piracy , lol........oh well....
at least we keep it to unlicensed ones now...

Like Crenshinibon said, it tends to happen mostly with mainstream titles, manga like those published in Shonen Jump etc.
Magazines like SJ are solely catered to the interest of the readers, whereas less popular magazines such as AX are published solely as a means for artists getting their stories out, untainted by its (usually older) audience.

qft

Also a lot of shoujo authors with long running series tend to "give readers what they want": more appearances by popular characters, crucial decisions by central or sub characters, sometimes they even change the whole plot.

As for authors in mags like SJ or Shonen Sunday, they're sometimes pressured by their editors and publishers who usually go w/ the popular vote. The most recent example I can remember is in Naruto. Kishimoto wanted to kill off the other members of "Hebi" since the had out-lived their usefulness, but he was told to keep them in the story since they were so popular.

If they are smart, then they do.

Mangakas have an opportunity that Book writers don't have and that is to tweak their works on the go, and make it better with each pacing day...

It doesn't matter how good of a writer you are, you can always make something better if you think very hard about it.

But they can also change it for the worse... so is a two edged sword.

Some are good enough to have the story planned out from the get go, Oda from One Piece has stated that he already has the ending worked out for the series, hence the quality and pace of the series hasn't dropped significantly at parts like naruto and bleach.

Not every mangaka has it planned out completely from the start, and it's better to go with your target audience's expectations to satisfy them than to get negative responses (shaman king? had to re-make the ending since the fans complained...) from them and lose popularity (and get cancelled). In terms of checking out english forums it hardly ever matters not just because of piracy and whatnots, but mostly because it's not their primary target. They're selling their works to people in Japan first and foremost, so it's not that applicable to model your work based on people who don't even get your work for months or even buy them once it's out.. none

In the end, like Crenshinibon said previously, it all depends on the publisher and the mangaka. Everyone's entitled to their way of doing things.

I have heard/read that in Hana Yori Dango, Kamio Youko originally intended Tsukasa to be a side character, but due to reader response changed the plan & made him the lead. No idea if it's true, but it seemed like a credible source at the time.

It does make sense for mangaka to at least know what the readers are thinking. Even if they don't change anything major, I can imagine cases where the readers might not really "get" what the mangaka was doing in a particular scene/sequence/whatever, so they might include something else in a later chapter to make sure the point gets across. Or maybe reader response is that a particular character is *really* mean, and the mangaka may think, "Ack, I didn't intend for him/her to come across as being THAT mean..." and change how they write the character a bit.
