Ever wonder why you've got hooked up in YAO/Shounen-ai?

Before I would only read shoujo and shounen mangas or watch interesting animes.
I've would never have picture my present self as a total hardcore yaoi fanatic.
I thought that boy to boy relationships are disgusting but I'm repenting big time now.
Thank goodness i've come to known yaoi, i'd be missing half of the fun in life.
I mean seriously i'm reading yaoi manga everyday and eagerly waiting for new yaoi animes.

I just wanna know what got you sucked in the yaoi/shounen-ai universe.
For me it was KYOU KARA MAOU/ GOD SAVE OUR KING.
I still remember the innocent relationship between Yuri and Wolfram.
Still my favorite all time.

Wonder what's yours. Can u share ur thoughts

😀 😀 😀

My first encounter with the BL world......hmmmm.... I don't remember much but it was prolly 3-4 years ago when I first reading manga. The first shounen-ai I read was Asterisk and that time I wasn't much familiar with the demographics so I didn't know what "shounen-ai" actually meant. Reading the first two chapters gave me some vague idea but I felt queer so stopped it.
Then I don't remember what happened -----maybe it began by reading short stories or oneshots...and then it dawned on me that I didn't particularly hate it but Yaoi was always a big no-no.

I read my first yaoi -Papa I love you-by mistake (thought it was shounen-ai) and was completely taken aback. I couldn't think clear for two straight days because I wasn't even aware of normal straight sex yet.
So I didn't start reading yaoi till last year when I read Aishiteru (FUJITANI Youko) and found it totally cute. I was always cautious of choosing yaoi----those that weren't graphic and intense and always skipped "those" pages. A few months back I became a pervert and started reading all sorts of themes ranging from incest, BDSM and other stuff. And I must say I still hate BDSM and incest-----:\
So that's pretty much the story of my first encounter with yaoi / shounen-ai.
Also I still prefer shounen-ai over yaoi unless the plot is really captivating.

I've been reading some light bromance mangas and tried yaoi only because I made a friend who was also as obsessed with anime/manga (pretty rare back then) and she liked yaoi.

So I tried it out of curiosity and my first was Minami Haruka. 😢

I chose her because her drawings looked cute and seemed closest to shoujo, but boy was I wrong.
I read Love Rental, and yeah I was freakin shocked. I was very innocent back then, and the uke was using words like c*ck and I had never seen it before, even if it was an unrealistic drawing of one.

I think I gradually tried to try to be more open minded and tried softer yaois like a couple years later but I think the one that really pushed me down the path of no return New York New York and Calorie.

Now, MH's mangas are soft to me and don't even make me bat an eyelash. You can see how far I fell in the hole. 🤣

Reading these types of threads are always fun.

I knew about the genre when i got into anime way back in 2010, but never really cared to look it up. (So fast forward to 2012.) Growing up, i was always on youtube and innocently stumbled across a few anime and manga music videos. After watching a few, it striked some curiosity in me. I have no idea what my first yaoi manga was, i wish i remembered! But i do remember my first few yaoi titles such as Little Butterfly and Koisuru Boukun, which were not the best for a beginner. I could've found something lighter but I didn't know what to choose or what the fuck i was even doing for that matter. Either way, i'm really happy i read them because i adore the author now and her works. (Still continuing to support senpai and morinaga!)

So yeah, back then reading yaoi made me feel so embarrassed because of the intimate scenes and now nothing fazes me anymore. It's funny when you think about it and how you become immune to stuff like that. I just admire the effort the mangaka's put into their work and how you can find such beautiful manga in this genre. I'm still standing strong after 4 years. 🙂

I started noticing yaoi (actually shounen-ai at first) probably 3 years ago. (As far as I can remember)
I was an avid fan of Shoujo/Josei manga. I'd wait for updates everyday and read everything I can find that are good. That is, until I got fed up with it. Cliche storylines, mostly innocent/naive/etc MCs, I became aware of all of these things that I can even predict what's going to happen in the end. At that time, I was also watching Hetalia at some point. And since there were a lot of male characters, I guess I started...shipping them?
After getting fed up, I became curious at the shounen-ai section. The very first manga that I could've read was Seven Days -- and oh my god, I loved it. Shounen-ai stories may be cliched but in a male's point of view, it was refreshing.

My first yaoi anime that I watched was Sekaichi Hatsukoi. I was becoming more interested in shounen-ai/yaoi that I wanted to try watching one. I remember the time when I found out my sister was watching it and when I tried looking at it, she wouldn't tell me the name or show it to me (probably because she thought I was too young to see the forbidden world.) and when I actually did read shounen-ai, I'd always lie to her how I only read shounen-ai because yaoi is a NO-NO (but i started reading yaoi manga) and there were sex scenes and she'd probably get angry of me for that. But now, it's like "Hahaha, have you read this [Insert Yaoi manga with very hot scenes.]?" "I love this [Insert R18 yaoi manga.]" "Do you want to see all of my Yaoi lists?"
