To the RH & manga community,

It has been brought to our attention that one of our main translators has been arrested. We have been informed that it might be related to his involvement with one of our manga series that we are currently scanlating. Furthermore, we have been receiving C&D from Kodansha (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kodansha) to end our projects, otherwise face legal charges. However, we never thought it would escalate to this level. We are currently doing everything in our power to assist the translator in question. We are sure we can keep this person from facing any strong legal charges, however to ensure that no other member must face anything of this nature we will disband for the good of everyone here.

On another note, many of our fellow members are thinking of starting up an Anime Fansubbing group afterwards. We will be recruiting, and will be deciding on which Anime to sub for Spring/Summer of 2010. If anyone is interested please feel free to try for a position as there were not a lot of members who had experience with Fansubbing.

The RedHawk Scanlation team would like to thank you all for your support. Without you guys it wouldn’t have been
possible to get this far, so from the bottoms of all our hearts, thank you. We're incredibly sorry that we cannot continue to provide quality scans to you all. Let’s hope this Fansubbing group that we’ll be forming will stay just as strong as our scanlation counterpart has been up until now.

Just read this. Something like this happening means that there are dark days for scanlation world.
Apparently you face criminal charges if you do this this.
I guess arrested translator is Japanese, but this practice could easilly spread. But, hey, maybe this is just April fools joke...although I don't think they would be messing around with something like this.

Wow... okay... puts on glasses 🙂 Arrest for manga scanlations, really?!!! 🤣

Yeah... I can imagine: the FBI and CIA behind the scenes of a shadow operation aimed at bringing down the scanlation world. 😛

Heh.. giving up scanlating because of the issue but taking up subbing? 😮 :

Didn't something like this happened before (as an April 1st joke with the group going to be disband because of C&D letters)?

Besides, I think they're too busy protecting themselves and others in the government. =/

I didn't even look at the date until I saw it mention Kodansha. Since scanlation isn't illegal unless it's licensed on the language it's being scanlated. And even if that was the case, it would be no Kodansha's problem, since no one would buy less their manga, since it's on a different language. But that's a great idea. I can imagine the terrified fans of Red Hawk reading that announcement.

Wrong thinking. Scanlation IS illegal in basically every case, no matter what language you scanlate it into

But isn't that only in the country the original is released?

I forgot who, but someone said that even fan art is illegal, so I'm sure that scanlations are illegal, it's just that the mangaka tolerates the scanlations since most of it's usually for promotional purposes for FREE and not for profit.
