I'm trying to figure this out, was wondering if anyone could help. I was browsing Cardcaptor Sakura's page and noticed some mangas attached as "alternate stories" looking at those mangas I saw even more "alternate stories" there as well. Seeing all of tehm were series by CLAMP, I checked out there page, and found every story there has some alternate story. Now to my understanding alternate story means to me that their in the same universe (as in follow the same restrictions, same period etc), it's just that the charters and overall plot has changed. Am I wrong? If not how can these be all connected, because I'm pretty sure xxxHoLic has nothing to do with Chobits.

Yeahh.
It can get pretty complicated.
But for me; in my understanding is that there are characters that crossover from other CLAMP stories. For example: XXXHolic's main character, Watanuki appears in Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles as well so it's like an alternate.

And if I remembered right, some of Chobits' characters appeared in XXXHolic; that's why it was deemed as an AU since it was another setting.

But I'm not a hardcore CLAMP fan so I might be wrong. o=o

Your right, chobits surly isn't connected with xxx-holic, but in xxx-holic and tsubasa chronicles you see some charactors from their other works, like chi is like a side charactor in tsubasa. (chi is chi, but isn't the same chi as in chobits... I know that prolly dosnt make any sense)I only really know that xxx-holic and tsubasa are connected through their story line. But most of the time, only charactors from their other works show up as a side charactor.

I really hope that made sense :/

I think you have it pretty much down. Some of the characters of CCS, X/1999, etc. show up in xxxHolic and Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles as side characters (except for Sakura and Syoaran who are the protagonist in TRC). As for the "same universe and same restrictions" idea, that can be agued. In Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles, the main characters travel to different worlds and there are different restrictions in each world. The brief appearances of characters and items from CCS, Tokyo Babylon, etc is the only way they can be tied into xxxHolic. For Chobits, Chi showed up in TRC, and the book Chi read can be seen in xxxHolic.

Chi's ears end up in xxxHolic. (I think her children's book also migrates through the multi-verse.) Which is partly why it gets incredibly messy pretty fast. CCS for example is now officially a

prequel to TRC, where previously it'd be either a side story or alternate story. Legal Drug has a cameo in xxxHolic.

CLAMP is making TRC and xxxHolic their multi-verse portals, so all the works are supposed to be tied in somehow. If you're familiar with DC/Marvel comics, it's the same deal. I think the CLAMP naming scheme is that each manga takes place in it's own world, and all the worlds are part of one universe, but they could have a multi-verse structure where each manga=universe, but all universes linked.

You guys never read the premise for either xxxHolic or TRC did you? CLAMP specifically wanted to make a story where all their creations are linked together, with "The Shop" of the Dimension Witch being a sort of "focal point".

In reference to story645's CCS remark:

You're kind of right, but CCS is in the same universe as Watanuki's Japan... you probably understand it if you're read past like chapter 180 or so in T:RC.

CLAMP basically interwove xxxHolic and TRC into one giant story altogether, and to loophole the rule... the Dimension Witch "did" say that in the first few chapters, "You will see people you recognize, but they will not be the same people you have met or have known"... something like that. But anyway, YES, both xxxHolic and T:RC are actually linked. You'll notice constantly that The Dimension Witch and the guys from T:RC will continually chat from time to time, and the volumes they appear to chat in are at different times. CLAMP has repeatedly stated that they would have a bunch of characters from all their other stories make cameos in the story... actually, a lot of them are multiple cameos. To completely understand the timeline / storyline, it's recommended that you read both, but really reading either one is fine.

If you guys haven't read far into either manga, it's only natural to get confused...

but I found that everything made perfect sense after chapter 185 in T:RC.
