I choose the "no one I know", because I've never been to Japan before, so I have never met them personally, but that doesn't stop me feeling sympathetic.

I'm honestly perturbed at the high ranking that fifth choice got.
Really, manga and anime have a higher value than peoples lives? And what if your favorite manga happen to end because of them losing their lives because of said-earthquake and said-tsunami triggered by said-earthquake? Are you just going to whine and complain, or are you actually going to start feeling something called "sympathy"?

This is a site for manga, not for sympathy.

I have a lot of international friends/people I know. I know of at least 2 that I communicate with on and off that are okay.

I don't personally know anyone who was affected by the Tsunami in Japan though a friend of a firend of a friend is looking for someone in the Sendai area.

As for the Tsunami...there is localized damage in Oregon, California, Peru, Chile, and Indonesia that I know of.

I'm a bit of a news nerd so I've cultivated a few lists of where to get information. It's too big to put there but:
http://akuma-river.dreamwidth.org/402311.html (my journal post)
http://community.livejournal.com/ontd_political/7881735.html <- live-post where I'm posting relevant tweets

It's hard to listen to NHK http://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/index.html or Al Jazeera or Russia Today and not break down in tears as you realize the scale of the damage and the death toll.

I don't think it will be as high as Sumatra's Tsunami...but there are entire villages just gone. The Tsunami went inland 10km in some areas.

This week I've been following the Arab World Protests, Libya's masacre, Wisconsin protests, WikiLeaks, and now Japan's earthquake/tsunami/nuclear power plants meltdown.

This is just...I often find myself having to take breaks from watching the news and reading newspaper live-blogs on it because it gets to you.

Btw estimate death toll >10,000

I'm not sure the casualties would be that high, prob around 1000-3000. I was awed by how the response and preparation for years could prevent more casualties from the tsunami. There are losses and i give my condolences, but wth put the fifth options anyway. Some people will surely pick that options anyway because this is a manga site, doh.. Except if Fukushima nuclear reactor do explode in a big way like chernobyl i think the casualties would remain in those range.
1 people die is a tragedy, 1000 die is just a statistic...... Stalin.

The death toll is only for now 2000. But the government can't get in touch with 10000 of the 17000 that live in Minamisanriku, they are "only" considered like missing people.

I don't really realise why people think this fifth choice is choking. I mean, I don't see much of a difference between the "No one I know" and the "I don't really know anyone but at least there is the authors of the manga I read who have a "relation" with me", hence, it'll lead to the result that you are indeed worried about those mangaka. Of course, the answer was spelled with "manga" (as in the physical, non-living object", but looking at it, I considered half of it to be of safety for the mangaka itself. And being actually worried about a person you know at least by name is about normal (I'm sorry to say that even if I feel sorry for all the unknowns people in Sendai, it's not much of a shock. Of course, I'll mourn, but if a mangaka I knew died, I would mourn a bit more for him. And just like that, if a person I personally knew died, I'll mourn even more for him. That's basic, humans aren't Saint, so you are "ranking" people depending on how you are related to same (as horrible as it may sound)
Well, of course, there is always straight stupid people who don't care about the well-fare of the people at all, and just really want manga, but I highly doubt it's those 25.7% people (and I would say, I don't care about it, it's not like I'm surprised about it). Well, this long post to say, that I'm actually more surprised at people being offended about it, there is no real need to.
Oh, and just to clear things on my side, I didn't vote for this, I'm in Tokyo and I quite felt it too. Though, sorry for the samaritan people, but I'm not going to do anything special other than continue my life, go to my school everyday, etc... I don't have at all the soul necessary for going to Sendai and helps the people there (and I don't consider that heartless at all)

you said someone personally involved, it can be understood as someone who involved in causing the earthquake. "do you know the earthquake perpetrator?" interdasting!

Sorry to burst your bubble but I'm keeping tabs on the Japanese news networks and people I follow from Japan and there is at least 3 different sites in which hundreds of bodies are washed up. Offical death toll is now about 687 but that is those who are counted. Not the estimate.

This was a 9.0 earthquake that created a massive Tsunami that has sent damage to Hawaii, California, Oregon, Peru, Mexico, Chile, Indonesia... Japan had about 10-30 minute warning.

This tsunami was going 500mph. A wall of water of 10m height in some places. Parts of the Tsunami swept inland about 5-10km. That is about 2-5 MILES INLAND.

There is square MILES of land that are now under water. Look at the sat images of before and after.

Sendai has a population of one million and is one of the most damaged areas. At least 6 prefectures have massive amounts of damage that we are only seeing from ariel copters because there is no communication on the ground. Entire villages, towns, are just gone. Swept away.

I was being conservative with my estimate. I'm hoping more people got out in time...but looking at the damage, maps, and population indexes of the places hit. It is going to be high.

Curse God? It's called judgment. If you think about it, we are pretty horrible tenants.

Thank you. I chose the fifth option, but in no way did I mean I didn't care about all of the people suffering from this. I interpreted it to mean "I don't know anyone there personally, but I am concerned about mangaka/other people in the industry whose works I enjoy."

I prefer to interpret the choices in an optimistic light. Otherwise it might be fair to say that choosing option two would be the same as saying "I know someone over there, so I'm worried about them and absolutely no one else."

Come on guys. Let's not be so ready to declare each other monsters 🙁

Honestly, the 5th choice is just
"No one I know" + "I read manga"
