Eye patches are a pirate thing. Pirates were/are awesome. So yes, if you want to try to draw a cool looking evil guy, what's better than an eye patch?

What sort of ridiculous over-generalization is that?

Not ALL bad guys wear eyepatches!! There are some yummy, good-looking guys who wear them too!!

Take for instance...
Kagari (a pirate bird) from Hyakkiyakou Juliet. What a hottie...
and... Zero's teacher/guardian in Vampire Knight.

Eyepatches are pretty bad@$% in my opinion. 😉

But the good guys with eye patches are the bad guys. Not the evil guys, but the bad guys from the good side. ..?

HOW ABOUT NOW 😕 ?

Eye-patches are easy to draw and are usually pretty bad-@$%... maybe there's a dark past with the character... or s/he simply has lazy eye and is trying to fix it...

Same with facial scars... kinda like a fancy "war wound" without the "arggggh matey" reference like an eye-patch... Maybe eye-patches don't look too scary in comparison to a facial scar, so a character ("bad-@$% good guy") is more approachable?

Whereas drawing a tattoo (for bad@$%ery purposes) over and over again will get pretty tiring for a mangaka and his/her assistants?

To tell you the truth I prefer the character drawn without eye patches like Manji in Mugen no Juunin, he doesn't care about others thinks about his appearance so he doesn't need eye patch, plus the missing eye makes him look more evil and terrifying.

Question one: Why not? Not all bad guys wear them. It's called... character design!

Question two: Who knows. Ask the authors or something.

it adds mystery to a character xD
it makes you curious about what's behind the eye patch, or makes other characters curious about what's behind it.
